Enigmatic, reclusive filmmaker whose one feature, "Limite/The Limit" (1929), is regarded as a classic of Brazilian cinema. Made when the director was 19, "Limite" is a visually beautiful display of surrealistic cinema techniques depicting the visions of two men and a woman lost at sea in a lifeboat. The great Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein reportedly described it as "an extremely beautiful film" and an example of the "pure language of cinema." The film was virtually lost for 20 years. Restored in 1979 and relaunched on the art-house circuit, it was triumphantly screened in 1984 at the opening of the Berlin Film Festival and at the 1991 London Film Festival.
