What to Know

Critics Consensus

Robert Zemeckis' 3-D animated take on the Dickens classic tries hard, but its dazzling special effects distract from an array of fine performances from Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman.

Giles Hardie Sydney Morning Herald While for some there is something disconcerting about the lifeless eyes of the otherwise life like characters, it certainly lends itself to large 3D cinemas, with rubber faced characters and grand sweeping movement. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 6, 2018 Full Review Keith Uhlich Time Out The biggest surprise is that Zemeckis, so often in thrall to his digital palette, here uses it to freshly illuminate a time-honored text. Rated: 4/5 Nov 16, 2011 Full Review Tim Grierson The Simon The greatest tension in this adaptation of A Christmas Carol isn't between Scrooge and those pesky ghosts but within writer-director Robert Zemeckis. Nov 12, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Everything poignant and evocative about Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol has been rendered flat by Disney’s latest adaptation. Rated: 2/4 Aug 30, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Morbidly dark and frighteningly realistic - almost as if Tim Burton had a hand in the design. Rated: 6/10 Nov 28, 2020 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Christmas magic never fails to touch the heart and spirit and neither will A CHRISTMAS CAROL. God Bless Us Everyone. Dionisis T Truly weird and underrated as fuck! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Mark J I still like this film but it has its flaws. The animation leans into uncanny valley which makes it hard to love, would have preferred a bit nicer style. I do like the darkness of it especially the ending of the Ghost of Christmas Present. Main gripe here being shrinking Scrooge and the cause seen, a bit needless when there could have been other aspects of the book explored. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Colin T Let's start off by saying that I know this would be a bad movie. The movie looks stunning but is held back by the fact that the animation studders and people like Crachait look like their necks are broken. There is also the fact that the Ghost of Christmas past is a candle with a floating face, tell me who let that happen. I have no clue how this movie was ever allowed to leave the studio one of the worst movies I have ever seen. 0.5 stars Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review The D I was astounded to learn that this film did not receive universal top-notch acclaim. The talented performances, articulate interpretations, and technical creativity of this retelling of the Dickens tale were utterly stunning, in my opinion. The film is an illuminating hallucination brought to life through the alchemy of digital movie-making. I have lived long enough to know that life is filled with its inevitable moments of sorrow and tragedy. But those moments of darkness can serve to teach us about the mysterious realities of this life. Those realities include the fact that the smiles and the caring of our fellow human beings have the power to defray much of the fear and lonely desperation that are all simply poles of the same existence. Zemeckis and his crew achieve that message masterfully in this film. I hope that the production will one day be appreciated as the masterpiece which I believe it is. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review SouperCol 0 Fantastic story brought to life harrowingly in animation form. Shows all to well the struggles and hardships of the time whilst depicting how selfishness in life, without love, caring for others, can lead to misery. This story is a harsh reminder of how the rich only care for themselves whilst the poor struggling. A wake up call for humankind. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review NASHVILLE I Awful- not even a little bit ok. Who is this movie for? Several parts are unnecessarily terrifying and creepy, venturing into adult horror territory. Most of the movie is seriously unpleasant, and even disturbing if you make it into the ghost of christmas-present's segment. Using Jim Carrey to play all the roles is still annoying and a dumb ass move, just the way Zemeckis used Tom Hanks to play 12 people in Polar Express. Skip, skip, skip.
