Probably, but show me a movie about the drug trade that doesn't hook us first with guts and glamour before the moralizing fall. Rated: 3/4 Nov 9, 2007 Full Review Simon Foster sbs.com.au If it casts a slightly too favourable eye over the subject and his social impact, you can't begrudge the director his understanding of and affection for the period and its people. Aug 9, 2010 Full Review Bill Gibron Filmcritic.com Like much of the story of Harlem in the '70s, the truth is the least important part. Rated: 3/5 Dec 19, 2007 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters The principle at issue may not be plain to everyone, but "to those people inside the system of values, that's totally acceptable." Audience Member awesome bio-doc of a reel badassssssssss Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Tough man, tough film, very interesting and powerful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Rich, if sometimes repetitive, documentary following the exploits of Black Godfather Barnes, the friends he betrayed and his inexorable rise and fall from grace. Told via in-depth interviews and footage from the Harlem streets of the period, MU looks and feels like a 1970s exploitation film, mostly due to its superb funk soundtrack and cast of ugly mugs in pimp attire. Think Superfly meets The French connection but for real. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member interesting perspective on what took place during this era. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Gripping documentary about "Nicky" Barnes, the self-styled "Black Godfather" who became head of the heroin trade in Harlem in the mid-'70s (played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in AMERICAN GANGSTER). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty boring documentary about Nicky Barnes. It had moments where it was somewhat entertaining, but those moments where few and far between. Watch American Gangster for a more entertaining experience and leave it at that.
