John C There's little good I can say about 'The Barbarians' - the script is bad. The sets look cheap. The villains are cliche and don't get me started about the acting. And yet I loved it. Some films try to be good and just - for one reason or another - can't manage it. Maybe they try too hard, or have a vision that outstretches the talent of the cast or film-makers. However, in this - pretty shameless - 'sword and sorcery' 'Conan' rip-off, everyone involved seems to know they're making a B-movie and they just roll with it. Instead of one barbarian protagonist (ala 'Conan') we get double for our money as identical twins play our two leads, separated from their peace-loving tribe by an evil army and forced to spend their lives training as gladiators until such day as they can escape and begin their journey of revenge. There's not a lot here that you haven't seen before in any similar type of movie from the eighties. The two leads are clearly hired for their bodies, over their acting talent and do the best with their limited emoting abilities and the below par script. While, on the other hand, you have the villains who chew up every piece of scenery they can with their over-the-top evilness. So it's no masterpiece, but despite its - many - flaws, you can't help but have as much fun as those on screen. If you're a fan of such silly films from the 80s, this one is worth a watch if you put your brain on hold for an hour and a half. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review xpig332 B The fact that people acted in this movie and someone produced it is proof that people will do anything for money! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Dan B One of the best B-Movies ever made. Golan-Globus magic!!! Richard Lynch blows A-list actors out of the water. Michael Berryman! Barbarian brothers! To get this masterpiece together like this with its warts and schlock is actually really really hard. Can you do another Godfather...? Yes. But can you do another The Barbarians and capture the magic of the original and movie year 1987...? No. Simply impossible. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Laurian D This movie deserves much more love and attention, it's one not to be missed, at any age. It's tongue in cheek but it features superb locations, a great score and very likeable characters. The atmosphere is one of a kind, it draw you into this crazy fairy tale that you will surely want to visit again once you've seen it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Peter P If you're ready for a tongue in cheek barbarian movie, is doesn't get much better than this. Despite low budget it has great production design. The barbarian brothers are dumb but likable, the girl has bright eyes and a joyous smile, and all seem to have a great time here. Some good action scenes, especially the horse-waggon chase at the beginning. Highly entertaining. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is everything awesome, and horrible, about the '80s Conan knock-offs. Absolutely atrociously acted, but so much so it's hilarious. Two bodybuilder brothers who accidentally became "actors" turn this campy pile of garbage into a special and wonderful piece of cinema. Anyone who watches this without some kind of enjoyment has a cold, dead soul. Only to be watched as an accident (e.g. some random lazy Sunday), or with your D&D-loving pals with a case of beer. You will not regret watching this under the correct circumstances. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
