Antonio (Antonio Gades) is a choreographer who falls madly in love with the sultry star (Laura del Sol) of his flamenco-infused production of "Carmen." While his feelings for Laura are strong, he cares just as strongly about the show. On top of his fierce emotions, Antonio is confused about the proper direction for the performance. Before long, his affection mutates into jealousy, and the lovers' tale begins to reflect the famous tragedy of the opera they perform on stage.

Molly Haskell Vogue The conceit -- life imitates art and director goes for the tartish Carmen -- turns into a tireless constraint all too soon. Feb 27, 2020 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Carlos Sauras received another Oscar nomination for his thrilling interpretation of Bizet's opera, set in a flamenco hall and telling a real-life story parallel to the Merimee's tale. william k Dynamic and exciting variation on Prosper Mérimée's novel delivers some truly breathtaking choreography and a quite melodramatic subplot, introducing the mesmerizing Laura del Sol. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The film has an additional value in the display of flamenco dance and music. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review raphael g Great energy, music, and cinematography. The acting wasn't the best, or some of the lines. But the rest definitely made up for it. Great to see Paco de Lucia there! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite possibly the best movie of the year, tying with "Tender Mercies". The sultry flamenco dancing and guitar playing integrated the story of Bizet's opera with the dancers' stories of love, lust, and hatred. This was totally sexy, passionate and romantic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Enchanting, savoury story about love, lust and theatre. Lacks originality, but keeps you waiting and hungry for more. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member What seems to be a similar movie to "Blood Wedding" with Carlos Saura capturing the rehearsal and casting process of Antonio Gades' production of "Carmen", is actually more about the madness of the artist, and the art crossing over into his life, violently. Gades playing a fictional version of himself, is casting a production of "Carmen", and during the casting, he finds what might be the perfect girl to play "Carmen". But with the frustration and the madness comes jealousy and anger, to the point that Gades isn't just directing anymore, but has become the jealous lover himself.
