Gary Arnold Washington Post It's not what you'd call a classic or a class comedy act, but it has the kick of an embryonic pop phenomenon. The great Dangerfield movie, however, has still to be made. This one doesn't get quite enough respect. Thom N A run-of-the-mill mother-in-law hijinks comedy takes on a genuine shine in the reliable comedic hands of Rodney Dangerfield. Mild racial stereotyping date the film as classic 1983 fodder, but it gave us plenty of chuckles in spite of itself. Wacky in the beginning, wacky in the middle, and wacky to the abrupt ending, you can take in a few one-liners, think about the alienation in a class society, enjoy a jaunty little theme song courtesy of Billy Joel and then go to bed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Audience Member Definitely not the most sophisticated film, and if you expect that from a Rodney Dangerfield movie then you’re nuts. It’s a good time, and got a lot of laughs out of me. In the trailer, the girl got a bra on, but in the full movie you get to see her rack. There is also a scene in the trailer with people trying to sell him something and one of the people are dressed as the devil. Maybe I missed it or something idk, but that wasn’t in the Final Cut neither. This movie also likes to skip ahead in time quite a lot, which makes me wonder if they initially had a much longer version of the film in mind but cut it down during the editing process. This is one of those movies you forget about after watching, only to rediscover it and go “oh yeah I remember that”. I also find it interesting that Joe Pesci plays a character named Nicky, that starts fights with a lot of people, and also likes to gamble. Reminds you of a certain Martin Scorsese movie right? Not saying anything but i feel like Nicky Santoro is in some part a reference to this movie. 3.5/5 stars. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Matthew L This is a fantastic and underrated classic. Rodney Dangerfield is a believable character and Joe Pesci is brilliant as usual. This is worth the 95 minutes and then some. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Steve D It all comes off obnoxious and gross. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review S R One of my few favorites from childhood. Rodney Dangerfield is hilarious as always and an added bonus having Joe Pesce in a well done comedy role. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review christopher c. m This kind of story isn't new, they did something like in "The Flintstones". And the subplot of who's paying for Monty's daughter's wedding can kill the pacing. But it's Rodney Dangerfield, he's always brilliant. With great laughs and not original but fun plot.
