Welles shows himself a careful student of Alfred Hitchcock, but he falls far short of the Old Master. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, RKO cut it almost as badly as The Magnificent Ambersons, which was in production at the same time, and what survives is basically a lot of claustrophobic atmosphere and some fair-to-middling suspense. Go to Full Review

As usual, the studio suits ultimately kept Welles at bay and cut the film themselves, but the result is still a robust watch. Go to Full Review

The atmosphere of shadowy violence and death around every comer overwhelms the picture. Such studied eeriness hasn't passed before the eyes of this reviewer in years and it soon becomes irritating. Go to Full Review

A visually arresting film with a nod to the quirky that just can't be beat in terms of the bizarre. Go to Full Review

Good ending high above building ledge See more 03/22/2016 Confusing and hard to follow plot. Acting not particularly good. A longer running time might have helped to build the story and establish credibility of characters. Some nice ideas strung together rather than proceeding in a convincing manner. See more 10/12/2015 labored and formulaic See more 09/08/2015 Just rewatched this gem over the Labor Day weekend. It is impossible to watch and not see Welles's photographic eye in so many shots, although he claimed he did not direct. Cotten, one of the most underrated leading men of all time, is great as the desk bound scientist forced into an action role. So many atmospheric notes (the rainy shootout, the skipping record) make this a true joy. See more 06/14/2015 Orson Welles is widely rumored to have been the uncredited director of this film, although Norman Foster is the credited director. None of Foster's other films looked like this. Welles co-wrote (with Joseph Cotten) and produced the film and it features many of his troupe of Mercury Theater actors, including Cotten, Dolores Del Rio, Agnes Moorehead and Everett Sloane. Welles himself did take credit for the opening crane shot of the film, but has said they were in such a rush that whoever was closest to the camera at the time directed the film. He also said that it was Foster who was the film's director and not he. It wouldn't surprise me if veteran cinematographer Karl Struss ("Sunrise," "The Great Dictator," "The Fly") could be thrown in as one of those responsible for this film looking so good and so much better than anything Foster ever directed. The story here is a convoluted and serpentine tale of espionage, but it's the style and cast of the film that makes this film good. The chase around the outside of a building on a rainy night is particularly thriller (rain used much to the same effect that Welles would use later in his version of "Macbeth."). Not a classic, but well worth watching. See more Read all reviews
