Critics Consensus

A psychologically complex portrait of obsession, Laura is also a deliciously well-crafted murder mystery.

Laura doesn’t actually do anything to make the men fall apart; she just wears sleek outfits, throws parties, and, oh right, tries to pursue a career. Go to Full Review

anthony M @ArgoMalle44 Sep 10, 2026 I LOVED THE FILM, MADE THE YEAR OF MY BIRTH. I'VE ONLY SEEN IT ON TV, BUT FILM NOIRS ARE FINE ON THE SMALL SCREEN. I DO, HOWEVER, HAVE A NIT TO PICK. CLIFTON WEBB, WHO WAS GREAT, TURNS OUT TO BE THE KILLER. THE PROBLEM IS HIS CHARACTER DOES NOT ALLOW THE SNOBBISH JOURNALIST TO BE A KILLER --- ESPECIALLY OF A WOMAN HE LOVED. THE WRITER WANTS US TO BELIEVE THAT IF LYDECKER COULDN'T HAVE HER NO ONE ELSE COULD, YET HIS PLATONIC RELATIONSHIP WITH LAURA GOES BACK YEARS --- THERE WAS NO FIRE, JUST A SUPPER ONCE WEEKLY. MURDER ISN'T CONVINCING. BUT THE THEME SONG MAKES UP FOR MY CARP. I LOVE THE FILM, BUT I CAN'T ACCEPT THIS PEDANT COULD EVER BE A KILLER. Laura is a beautiful mystery in every sense. See more Farah R. @Farah Mar 1, 2026 Laura is aptly described as being one of the best noir thrillers of the 40s. Everything from the acting, cinematography, score, and plot twist make it a cinematic success. See more Read all reviews
