This film adaptation of Jules Verne's 1874 novel does have its positive points and is an entertaining movie. The first, and in my opinion the most important, reason is the cast. The late Michael Craig does well in his role as Captain Cyrus Harding, a Union Army Civil War General who leads an escape from a Confederate Prison Camp. He is also helped by a good supporting cast who all do well in their respective roles. It was quite a surprise to see the late Herbert Lom as Captain Nemo. It was very nice to finally, at least for me, see Herbert Lom in a role other than Inspector Dreyfuss in the Pink Panther film franchise. Another high point is the late Ray Harryhausen's stop motion effects. They hold up well even by today's digital standards. Despite this I do have my criticisms of "Mysterious Island" however. One criticism is that it is never fully explained why the castaways are unable to leave the island on Nemo's submarine Nautilus. That for me was the elephant in the room. Also, the whole plot thread with the pirates seemed like a last second add in to keep the story going. They appeared, they were all killed and that is that. In the end, "Mysterious Island" is a good movie that is worth seeing at least once. It is an entertaining movie to say the least. See more Mike M May 12 I saw this film when I was about 10 years old and looking through 10 year-old eyes I thought it was simply amazing. The backdrop was a sheet over the swingset at the local recreation center. I have fond memories of that time. The film could’ve only been a couple of years old if that I don’t know how the recreation center got it to my surprise. I found it just now on YouTube of all places. And although some of the stop action is a little jerky and you can see the backdrops which make it a little cheesy. Given that it was done in 1961. It’s still an amazing film and I still enjoy it given that it’s a nostalgia trip that may be the reason for it too. See more Dallas H May 4 This movie is cheesy, corny, and still fun to watch.
