Marsha McCreadie Arizona Republic Youth on the run can be a whole lot of fun, but Reckless, by first-time filmmaker James Foley, is a particularly dreary affair. May 31, 2020 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times Contrived and cliched as it turns out to be, ''Reckless'' has enough vitality to carry it for a while, although it never stops recalling other films. May 31, 2020 Full Review Emanuel Levy Variety Foley's feature debut treads the familiar turf of defiant teenagers, basically a compilation of contrivances and cliches lifted out The Wild One (Brando), Rebel Without Cause (James Dean), and most recently, All the Right Moves (Tom Cruise). Rated: C Nov 1, 2006 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com The only new element in the film is its explicit sex scene, which is performed to a pulsating rock soundtrack. May 31, 2020 Full Review People Staff People Magazine First-time director James Foley has made a drooling, teen-sex film dressed up as Rebel Without a Cause. Steve D The cast makes it worth it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review John D Just watched it for the first time in 30 plus years. Not only is it better than any of those 80s movies but really loved how much Quinn's character was so powerful!!! Definitely brandoesque and James Deanish!! Also, Daryl Hannah is absolutely stunning, beautiful, and smoking hot!! Loved, loved, loved it!! I don't know what anyone's talking about when they the director Foley was embarrassed by this movie??? Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review dave s Tracey (Daryl Hannah) is a high school senior who is intent on doing the right thing. Johnny (Aidan Quinn), on the other hand, is a morose outsider who wants more out of life, coming across as a mix of Brando and James Dean. Reckless is the classic and often retold story of disparate characters falling in love and trying to deal with the ramifications of their passion. Unfortunately, it's a wildly inconsistent film. At times, it is visually stunning with great dialogue, strong performances from the two leads, a handful of truly moving scenes, and a stellar soundtrack that helps capture the angst of the protagonists. However, elsewhere in the film, the dialogue is stilted, the music score is distracting, the performances of the secondary cast are embarrassing, and the whole thing has the vibe of something you've seen countless times before. Is it worth watching? Sure, but expect to be disappointed…at least some of the time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I remember back in mid 1984 renting this movie more than once because I found it gritty and interesting and wanting to cheer for the outcast high-school motorcycle guy who had everything stacked up against him but did not give up. Although it follows a plot style that some will say was very typical, I found it to be refreshing and different if a little dark and brooding. And? Heck it's got Daryl Hannah and hard not to like that! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review william s An underrated drama that's all about the performances. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Flawed but beautifully captures the insanity of the teenage psyche. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
