A devoted Dominican friar (Tcheky Karyo) of the 13th century is selflessly seeking to vanquish evil when he comes across a peaceful French village. Here he preaches to the ambivalent townspeople, demanding they repent or face the wrath of God. Before long his proselytizing gives way to persecuting when this overzealous monk believes he's discovered witchcraft in the form of Elda, an illiterate woman (Christine Boisson) who plucks healing remedies from the heart of the forest.
