Peter Bradshaw Guardian It’s a shaggy dog story leading to a punchline, of sorts, but one that feels woozy and illusory; it is not like a nightmare exactly, but a strange dream that’s difficult to shake on waking. Rated: 4/5 Mar 20, 2024 Full Review Budd Wilkins Slant Magazine Martin Scorsese’s After Hours mines urban anxiety to unsettling yet often hilarious effect. Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Christy Lemire ChristyLemire.com It might not make any sense. It might not even matter. But it's a blast while it lasts, and it brings the most perfect of endings along with the sunrise. Rated: 3/4 Apr 9, 2018 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...an exceedingly (and occasionally excessively) oddball comedy that is, for the most part, completely watchable from start to finish... Rated: 3/4 Jun 23, 2024 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk After Hours is hallucinatory: lit with the clarity of a nightmare and bursting with such surreal details as a cashier who pirouettes as he takes your check and a crescent of mousetraps guarding the bed of a demented cocktail waitress. Mar 24, 2024 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage Charming as well as exasperating; fun and tragic. [Full review in Spanish] Mar 6, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I have no idea what these people were watching. I love Scorsese but this movie was awful. Weird and nonsensical. Understand that it is 2025 and I'm watching for the first time but I can take myself back to when it was made so being dated isn't the issue. It's easily my least fav of his and I have all of his. I won't be keeping this in my collection, even to just complete it. It feels like a movie s person who just graduated from film school would make. Real experimental with more misses than hits. I also didn't find it funny. Not even once. I think these people are mistaking nonsense for dark humor. I say= go ahead and watch it, if you are a fan of his, but it's quite a stretch to think you'll like it in any way. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Audience Member An amazing one-night odyssey film. The quirky dark comedy film that takes Martin Scorsese back to the filmmaking dojo where he first thrived as a young director: New York City, with a minimal budget. It has all the tension, wit and swagger that Scorsese’s films are known for, but stands out by following an ordinary cubicle employee instead of a violent antihero. Griffin Dunne is great as Paul Hackett because he maintains the audience’s sympathy, even if it’s not always deserved. Having anyone besides Robert De Niro in the lead also helps separate this film from the rest of Scorsese’s filmography. The eclectic supporting cast are another crucial ingredient in making it a rewatchable comedy set during a transitional period for New York City. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Audience Member A special kind of fever dream only Scorsese could properly deliver on. It's got it all, from start to finish, delivering intrigue, heart, and hilarity. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Christian K Wow, definitely my favorite of the 70s/80s Scorsese I have seen. The energy, overlap, and performances all go together really well. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Hector I A minor film in the master's filmography, but it's the film that kept him going in cinema, so there's that! We follow the story of Paul, a computer worker in 80s New York working for a large company not unlike the Coen brothers' The Big Jump. One night, while dining alone, he agrees to follow a pretty woman, and this is the start of a night like no other! The character is plunged into a world of nightmares in the Soho district, meeting some very strange characters with many existential problems.Faced with this, Paul the hero loses control, because instead of going home, he tries to cope with all the problems. The real fear, beyond the madness of this universe, is that nothing seems to work to get Paul out of his situation. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
