Stuck-up figure skating whiz Kate Moseley (Moira Kelly) is denied a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics after a fall. As Kate drives off partner after partner, her coach, Anton (Roy Dotrice), must quickly find her a new one in order to be ready for the next Olympics. Enter arrogant former Olympic hockey player Doug Dorsey (D.B. Sweeney), who briefly encountered Kate years before. Reluctantly teaming up, Kate and Doug's icy rapport begins to thaw, resulting in a chemistry both in and out of the rink.

The chemistry between Sweeney and Moira totally makes you believe them, and it’s a great movie See more Joel H Jan 28 One of the most surprising things about watching The Cutting Edge again is realizing how low the budget must have been. This honestly feels like a made-for-TV movie. The editing, cinematography, and acting all feel a little lower in quality. I can’t decide if Moira Kelly was comically entertaining in her role as a bratty skater or if she is overacting. Meanwhile, D.B. Sweeney skates along in his stock hockey jock role. And while you see the characters practicing a lot, you don’t get to see much of the actual programs, which is strange. The Cutting Edge receives an average grade of execution from me. A light, enjoyable rom-com with two talented, seemingly mismatched individuals who bicker and fight as they train for the Olympics. There’s a scene I love where the former ice hockey player challenges the fiery female ice skating star to a game of shooting the putt past a target. She fails miserably, while he outplays her. There’s a lot of snappy dialogue verbal “foreplay” - as they continually challenge each other on the ice and off, before recognize they’re in love.
