This war drama depicts one of the biggest events of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg. The massive three-day conflict begins as Confederate General Robert E. Lee (Martin Sheen) presses his troops north into Pennsylvania, leading to confrontations with Union forces, including the regiment of Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels). As the battle rages on and casualties mount, the film follows both the front lines and the strategic maneuvering behind the scenes.

Critics Consensus

Gettysburg's reverent approach to history is balanced with the committed work of a talented cast - and the hard-hitting dramatization of a bloody turning point in the Civil War.

Ken K One of my all time favorite films as i am a bit of a Civil War buff and was a history major in college. The film does three things briiliantly. It is atonishingly literary, using excerpts line by line from the book (which I read and won the Pulitzer), it recreates the period beautifully, owing much to the reenactors, and the battle scenes, especially the fight for Little Round Top are exceptional. I Iove the scene when Meade arrives and says "Is this good ground, a place to have an army?" and Hancock says , "Very good ground sir, VERY good ground." How often do you see that in war movies? I was stunned to see the first encounter with Buford as to how they fought, firing in line at close range. I saw it in the theater first. I condsider the acting generally very good to excellent. I particularly liked Sheen as Lee and Daniels as Chamberlain. Two observations. The film slants its focus to Shaara's take on Longstreet's oppostion to Lee's plans and if there is one criticism, it spends too much time with the Confederacy and the Confederate"Cause". But overall it is a film I return to again and again as it is so thoroughly well done as an epic. Considered one of the best Civil War films ever made and usually a top ten in military historical films. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/25 Full Review Cindy R I had ready Gettysburg by Stephen Sears before watching the movie. I enjoyed its focus on the conflict and decisions that where made before and during the battle. There was a lack of Hollywooding the historical battle and turning it into romantic deviations. It stayed pretty close to the battle and the outcomes of the decisions made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Wes K Its a Great War film Its probably an hour to long and there are some cheesy scenes with people dying but Its also a crazy production of man power so many people on screen at once. Very good. 7.9/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review John C Gettysburg is an exemplary film based on the incredible true story of the most pivotal engagement of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of the men who fought there. The superb performances of Jeff Daniels as Joshua Chamberlain and Tom Berenger as James Longstreet are not only Oscar worthy, but truly breath life into a largely forgotten period of American history. With breathtaking practical effects, stunning on-location filming, a beautiful and often emotional score, thousands of reenactors, thought provoking dialogue and internal and external conflicts such as only a war can bring, Gettysburg is a film that both casual viewer and hardcore historian will thoroughly enjoy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Adam P Just brilliant movie. Have watched numerous times and really enjoy this movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Richard H This movie describes the Confederate soldiers as heroes fighting for "Virginia" and never really digs into the fact that they were fighting for the right to own and subjugate human beings.
