When young army cadet Ciccio (Alessandro Momo) is assigned to spend seven days in the service of a wounded army captain, he little suspects what's in store. Blinded by an explosion, Fausto Consolo (Vittorio Gassman) is nevertheless a pompous, prideful and lecherous aristocrat who needs Ciccio to keep him out of trouble. As they travel across Italy by train, Fausto variously ruffles feathers and chases women until they reach Naples, where he plans to honor a suicide pact.

Scent has the sweet smell of success, and Gassman comes out smelling like a rose. And, aside from those unforgivable cliches, it's a worthwhile movie. Go to Full Review

Christian M Dec 19 Vittorio Gassman: the greatness of the repulsive. This is cinema that unsettles rather than pleases, forcing us to coexist with morally unpleasant, emotionally complex characters. Gassman’s performance is raw and unforgettable, constructing a presence that commands attention without seeking empathy. Alessandro Momo complements him perfectly, creating tension and chemistry that enhances the narrative. Initially, the story may seem less compelling, but deeper reflection reveals its emotional and moral richness. Dino Risi and Ruggero Maccari craft a precise, measured screenplay that lets characters define themselves through actions. The film’s emotional power lies in its subtext, exploring how the soul perceives life when sight is lost, and how trauma and self-perception shape morality. A human, provocative, and lasting cinematic experience that scratches, hurts, and challenges the viewer. See more N. G. S 12/25/2024 So much richer and subtler than the spam-bang Pacino version. The Hollywood gonzo squad tried to make it unobtainable for a while. Can you spell "desperate"? See more 01/22/2018 Profumo di Donna might seem like a cheesy Italian romance and it does have its overly melodramatic moments, but due to the subtle acting of Gassman and the great chemistry between Gassman and Momo the movie has a well-balanced narration. It cannot simply be reduced to sex jokes and lewdness, although Fausto's jokes sometimes are rather crude. The writing is spot on and the message of a broken old army captain is fantastically presented against the backdrop of some of Italy's most beautiful cities.
