Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Its character based storytelling approach draws you into the story, and by the time the ship begins to sink you’re thoroughly invested. Rated: 4/5 Aug 27, 2022 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row It's standard Hollywood stuff, but Webb and Stanwyck are both in fine form, adding moments of humanity and emotional truth to the otherwise stilted surroundings. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Virginia Graham The Spectator Titanic, the story of the great liner's first and only trip across the Atlantic, is a perfectly excellent picture, finely balanced between fact and fiction, stocked with plausible characters, working up quietly but strongly to its shattering climax. Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Though Stanwyck and Clifton Webb make for an unlikely married couple, this b/w Oscar-winning 1953 melodrama about the sinking of the famous liner is worth seeing. Old Movie Watching with R A well made drama set around the Titanic disaster. I liked the balance of Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb as the struggling couple about to face the unexpected disaster. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/24 Full Review LANDON T Nah Titanic 1997 on top bois. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/24 Full Review DanTheMan 2 Happy Anniversary to the big silly boat with a million films based on her. Chances are when you hear Titanic, it's most likely your mind will think of the James Cameron film, one that combines tragedy with authenticity, this 1953 film instead opts for melodrama and wildly laughable inaccuracies. It doesn't help that most of the characters are archetypes or cardboard cutouts, going through all the motions you can expect, it's all too safe reflecting the cautiousness of Hollywood productions from the time. However despite the lousy screenplay, I do have to credit the film's passable direction, Joseph MacDonald's occasionally beautiful photography and ultimately the film's model sequences that depict the titular ship. Ultimately, Titanic isn't a gruelling experience, clocking in at a respectable 97 minutes. Still, there isn't enough meat to dig into with this tale, clearly wishing to be the happy-go-lucky depiction of the sinking but not to the point where it does what the animated films did... and yet it still feels really cheap, ending by just stating what happened after the sinking, almost as if it was only made to be a backdrop and bank on the public's familiarity with the name. There was little reason for this to be called Titanic unless they were going to devote more time to it outside of the transition shots... the iceberg even hits the wrong side! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Meydiana R Don't watch this film if you are a stickler for details; Warning: Spoilers Most of the sets are inaccurate and there are anachronisms galore. There was no siren wailing during the sinking; the ice sliced open the starboard (right) side, not the port (left), there are countless other errors in this film too many to count. What makes it so watchable? Why, Barbara Stanwyck and Thelma Ritter of course!!! Stanwyck gets the histrionics as only she can deliver them while Ritter gets all the wisecracking one-liners - as only SHE can deliver them. Robert Wagner and Audrey Dalton make a beautiful couple, but they take a backseat to the two "tough broads" of the silver screen. Even Clifton Webb seems weak and prissy here. But then to me, he always does. The script has crackling dialogue and deservedly one an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/22 Full Review Audience Member It is understandable that the movie has some inaccuracies. Many thing about Titanic were yet to be discovered. However, what i did not like is supposed to be 1912 and yet the clothes the actors wear are very current (at the time ) .So they look 1940's /1950's people and not people from earlier 20th century. Takes you out of the story. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member The tale of the fateful Titanic is a history made for melodrama, however in this version Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck pull it through with heart breaking and gut-wrenching performances. Stanwyck is absolutely the best part of this film - vulnerable, strong, and real. Despite the outcome being known there is still wonderful tension created by several supporting stories as well which I wish had been explored further. The timeline and ship's actions were strictly based on the ship's logs, but you'll notice the ship does not break in half which was discovered much later and thus the actual sinking is quite quick. As is the end of the film. I wish there had been a few loose ends tied up with a scene aboard a rescue ship or back on land. There are also several very cringy scenes including a racist jig known as the "Navajo Rag". This scene is not needed and seems much more 1950s than 1912, so it's a shame on many levels it was ever made. I think the most interesting thing, from a modern perspective is that this film was made only 40 years after the event - in comparison to making a film about the 80s today. I just find this comparison hard to wrap one's head around. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
