Critics Consensus

Bad Boys stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have enjoyable chemistry; unfortunately, director Michael Bay too often drowns it out with set pieces and explosions in place of an actual story.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian Watched again now, Smith’s performance is weirdly subdued, as if all the emphasis is really on the established comic talent Lawrence, and Smith is his straight man. Jimmy M 8/10 a good film it was fun and there was good action in it and scenes Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review bill k the thing that's appealing about bad boys is not the chemistry between smith and Lawrence but the directing style from a newcomer which we haven't seen done before in previous action comedies before this one the story/plot is strong and engaging I was invested with what was going on we have two cops helping a witness stop a criminal and his gang which lead to a series of chases which happen only later in the film the comedy lands and it gives us enough chuckles bay has no problem giving us witty comedy. and again the story makes sense and has very little to no plot holes. lawrey and burnet are memorable characters with compelling charachterisations the acting is phenomenal I honestly thing it should have got an Oscar nomination for the performances and the script bay needs to win an Oscar someday because this was back when he made meaningful action films that weren't the typical leave your brain at the door fluff like he made with 6 underground and that they actually had brain cells and imagination. bad boys is the best buddy cop film ever screw lethal weapon, 48 hours and all those other action junk that came before it, this is how you make a great buddy cop film that Is like no other. and Michael bay is the best action director out there no one can match the way he combines action with involving drama and likable and entertaining characters we get invested with. never mind John woo, Michael Mann, rob cohen, Paul green grass, John mctiernan and even the Scotts because Michael bay is far better and more talented and skillful than those other jokes of action directors. his first film deserves the praise that is given to the likes of terminator, Indiana jones, robocop, and die hard its a masterpiece of action comedy adventure storytelling and human dynamic Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Hayden C A good movie that started off an amazing franchise. This movie is great and all but it is definitely the worst of the Bad Boys movies. I didn’t feel as entertained as the other movies but it did have some very funny and great action moments. In all this movie is good for a watch every once and a while but it started one of the best franchises ever. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Kevin P Dumb fun that shows surprising restraint for Michael Bay’s first directional entry. The story and gender politics are super cliche, but the movie easily makes up for this with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s irresistible buddy cop chemistry. I could watch them bicker like an old married couple all day. The action and cinematography is also pretty entertaining, minus some incoherent shaky cam near the end of the movie. It’s not the best of the genre, but it’s a solid entry nonetheless and has certainly earned some of its hype. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review matthias s *Bad Boys* has its moments, mostly thanks to the electric chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. These two are hilarious together, with the banter and timing always landing. The dialogue keeps you laughing, and they’re the true highlight of the film. But here's the thing—the movie drags a bit. The pacing feels off, and at nearly two hours, it could’ve definitely used a tighter edit. The plot’s paper-thin for that runtime, and it’s hard to ignore how much the action-heavy scenes slow things down. Michael Bay’s direction doesn’t help; I’ve never been his biggest fan, and here, he’s too focused on spectacle at the expense of momentum. It’s like the movie can’t decide whether it’s a comedy or an action flick, and as a result, it loses steam. With a better director, *Bad Boys* could’ve been a smarter, sharper buddy cop movie.
