Derek Elley Variety Jackie Chan takes a career swerve with Crime Story, a dark-edged cop thriller in which the star's stunts play second fiddle to plot and mood. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Time Out Moody visuals, expertly paced montages and climactic sequences aboard a rusting sea-tanker and in a burning slum tenement all deliver above and beyond genre norms. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle It's all so... Jackie, and if you're a fan, you won't be disappointed. Rated: 3/5 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review TV Guide The imaginative fight and stunt sequences that fans have come to expect from Jackie Chan, while highly enjoyable, ultimately derail the film's credibility. R 9 First time I've seen Jackie Chan in a non-Western film. Conclusion? Need to watch more of those! 'Crime Story' is an entertaining 107 or so minutes, as I had a feeling it would be in truth - Chan is usually a fun watch, after all. Admittedly, this 1993 release is more drama than comedy, which is obviously fitting given it's based upon a real life incident. The fight/stunt scenes are naturally the film's major selling point, but I also enjoyed those onscreen and the score - which comes strong at the end and across the subsequent credits. Chan is good value throughout, though I also rate Kent Cheng's performance in this too - he suited his character well. Lastly, a little tid-bit about this flick that I found interesting: Some of the climax was shot at the (then deserted, obvs) Kowloon Walled City, prior to its demolition. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/23 Full Review Matthew B Best of Movies/TV Series Collection Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/22 Full Review Sameir A Crime story is another deviation from the original Police Story film series. Based on a true story the film is about the kidnaping of a millionaire. It was supposed to be darker with lot of inner conflicts in the protagonist's mind, but it was toned down by Jackie. Personally, I felt this was a wrong decision by Jackie. He missed a chance to showcase his acting abilities along with the already established martial arts talents. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/18/21 Full Review Audience Member One of Chan's most serious and gritty movies. He impresses and prices that he can do more than just punch, kick and flip his way through a narrative. It being a true story gives it extra weight. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member i love how this movie worked back then. but the social commentary works especially today if not even more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member The overly serious tone of the story doesn't fit Jackie Chan's style; and it shows throughout the movie. The goofy fight scenes feel out of place for one thing. I understand it is based on a true story, but I'm not sure they picked the right actor for the role. The plot moved slowly and incoherently. Still, I was entertained well enough to give it an average rating despite getting so many things wrong. Kent Cheng's performance was the saving grace of this film. Still, I would much rather watch Police Story again. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
