Two trains collide in rural Russia, one of them housing nuclear weapons that go missing after the wreck, and the U.S. government is alerted. Nuclear specialist Dr. Julia Kelly (Nicole Kidman) believes that there will soon be a terrorist attack, so Lt. Col. Thomas Devoe (George Clooney) joins Dr. Kelly as they try to track down the warhead-stealing culprits. They learn that Yugoslav terrorist Gavrich (Marcel Iures) has his hands on the weapons, and he's plotting a devastating attack on New York.

Leder tries to bring a sense of grief to a body-count-happy genre, but you can't have it both ways. Every time Kidman and Clooney take a break from their movie-star bantering to mourn a death, it rings hollow.

The film goes on autopilot for its last act, with the usual canned chase scenes down Manhattan streets, heroes climbing over automobiles, sirens blaring, cars crashing, etc. This used to be known as "second unit'' stuff. Now it's the centerpiece.

Understand this...I am writing in RT for the first time despite watching every flick possible in the world..I have watched this movie twice , once in the 2010 , and now in 2025 , and every passing year i can tell you this is a great movie releases in the wrong time. With the music score from Hans Zimmer and great casting , locations and choosing of realism over grandstanding , this movie is a good action flick who didn't get the credit like other 90'S action movies of the Hollywood. Yes there are some creative choices made , but then it won't be a movie if not taken . Trust me when I say this...this movie will go on to become a cult classic as the years go by

Peacemaker was a bit of ahead of its time. It is a fast paced and creative action movie with some well shot scenes and set pieces. It is tight, moves quickly and showcases its stars. I have returned to it through the years when I want something fun to watch.

If I compare it to what we have today in 2025, I’d say it’s a decent movie. From another perspective, though, it could have been much better. Some scenes lack logic and feel almost mechanical—for instance, when the US Air Force enters Russia and fights the villains. In that scene, not only does Russia barely fight back, but the entire focus is placed on George Clooney, which feels unbalanced. The overall idea of the movie is interesting, and considering it was released back in 1997, the cinematography and set design are quite good. However, the script and the finale felt weak and could have been more impactful.

You have to reward ambition. And this movie is major league ambitious. Huge budget, a ton of different locations, explosives, it is your prototypical blockbuster. Yeah, the two leads can get a little full of themselves sometimes, but still decent flick.
