A small film that relies too heavily on the charm of its big actors.

Amy Nicholson I.E. Weekly Silberling has shot what feels like the first home movie to get a national release; it's too cute to criticize for anything other than its fluff. Rated: B- May 15, 2009 Full Review Lisa Kennedy Denver Post So often the bearer of gravitas and dignity, Freeman shows up with a smirk on his face and a song in his heart Rated: 3/4 Dec 8, 2006 Full Review Richard Roeper Ebert & Roeper This is a sharp little slice of whimsy with Freeman giving a funny, very laid-back and sometimes touching performance. Dec 4, 2006 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com While Freeman and Vega are mildly entertaining, the story is too safe and precious to elicit anything more than a passing sense of amusement. Rated: D+ Apr 24, 2009 Full Review Prairie Miller WBAI Web Radio A Hollywood hotshot played by Morgan Freeman, befriends a supermarket cashier just so he can get familiar enough with acting like somebody poor, to get into character for his next movie, and the effort fails miserably. AE J This sleeper is a gem of a movie, quirky and comical, sweet and endearing without being schmaltzy. I dare say this is one of Freeman's best performances. Is it Unforgiven or Million Dollar Baby? No but he is just as fully engaged, more the part than actor, Freeman is filled with both charm and sincerity, becoming the friend you need on a bad day. The checkout girl (Paz Vega) he is researching for his next role is having one of those bad days and in need of a friend. The two have an easy chemistry between them with Vega capable of stealing a few scenes. There is that unspoken parting when the day is over reminiscent of Lost in Translation and executed just as well. Was it profound? Hard Hitting? A complicated plot with complex characters? No. Albeit the film succeeds where many cannot, at forging connections with the people around us, capturing the mundane and the ordinary without derision and giving a laugh or two, or three or many where other films serve grit for grit's sake. It was described in other reviews as fluff, it isn't that - it is levity and heart which is rarely seen. It was novel because it managed to be lighthearted and kind which is refreshing, a worth see. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Audience Member I won't pretend this is a groundbreaking movie, but I loved it anyway. It's more of a "slice of life" that just leaves you feeling like you had a great day with the two main characters. Morgan Freeman's character is a completely unencumbered free spirit - he has enough money and success not to be bothered by life's struggles. Paz Vega's character is a no-nonsense cashier who is tied to her reality as a grocery store clerk and the comparatively unfulfilling life that surrounds it. She is generally annoyed by her life and Morgan Freeman but still manages to have fun with him as she reluctantly lets him hang around with her for the day. They have great chemistry together, and it makes the movie. Some other notes: Paz Vega is gorgeous in this movie and somehow still manages to believable as a cashier. The soundtrack is also very fun, but it does seem a bit overused and can get a bit annoying towards the end. There are also lots of celebrity cameos which are largely pointless to the plot but give some laughs. So overall they do enhance the experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Koi P Chill movie with superb main characters. Thought provoking. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Rick M If you like hearing the f word every few seconds, right from the beginning, then this movie is for you. The writers and directors should be put up against a wall and... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Ashley H just couldn't enjoy it that much. not really exciting...
