A small film that relies too heavily on the charm of its big actors.

Amy Nicholson I.E. Weekly Silberling has shot what feels like the first home movie to get a national release; it's too cute to criticize for anything other than its fluff. Rated: B- May 15, 2009 Full Review Lisa Kennedy Denver Post So often the bearer of gravitas and dignity, Freeman shows up with a smirk on his face and a song in his heart Rated: 3/4 Dec 8, 2006 Full Review Richard Roeper Ebert & Roeper This is a sharp little slice of whimsy with Freeman giving a funny, very laid-back and sometimes touching performance. Dec 4, 2006 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com While Freeman and Vega are mildly entertaining, the story is too safe and precious to elicit anything more than a passing sense of amusement. Rated: D+ Apr 24, 2009 Full Review Prairie Miller WBAI Web Radio A Hollywood hotshot played by Morgan Freeman, befriends a supermarket cashier just so he can get familiar enough with acting like somebody poor, to get into character for his next movie, and the effort fails miserably. Oct 21, 2007 Full Review David Cornelius DVDTalk.com This is a dazzling piece of character study, set to a breezy, charming tone. Rated: 4/5 Apr 30, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Lovely little piece of escapism! Fun, funny, touching and memorable performances from the stars down to the cameos! I loved this movie!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/06/22 Full Review ronald h Essentially plotless, _10 Items or Less_ has kind of a meta quality: Morgan Freeman takes a role in a low budget indie film, just for fun--which is what he actually did here. Since the story is practically nonexistent, it's all about the acting. Freeman plays a famous (and nameless) actor who hasn't made a movie in four years, just because he doesn't want to work. For whatever reason, he has now decided to consider a role in a low budget film in which he will play a grocery store manager. Doing research for the part, he meets Scarlet (Paz Vega), a Hispanic check out clerk in a Los Angeles bodega. They end up hanging out all day, and he accompanies her to a job interview for an office position at a construction company. That's it. There are lots of light comedic moments and lots of dialogue, and the whole thing is kind of sentimental and sappy. Freeman's character is hard to believe. How many mega stars would spend the day with a grocery clerk? And not only that, but enjoy themselves? Nevertheless, Freeman is Freeman. He's a great actor, unfailingly impressive even when he's in a less-than-great movie. Paz holds her own with her monolithic co-star. She's feisty, very natural, and believable. There is a hilarious cameo by Bobby Cannavale, and an unnecessary and pointless cameo by Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman. I always wonder how much movie stars get paid for 15 seconds of screen time. In spite of its frivolity, I rather liked this insubstantial little 81 minute film. The acting sells it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Simple feel good movie.
