Critics Consensus

Sleek and shiny on the surface, The Fast and the Furious recalls those cheesy teenage exploitation flicks of the 1950s.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media This is a bad, bad movie. Skip it. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Todd McCarthy Variety A gritty and gratifying cheap thrill, Rob Cohen's high-octane hot-car meller is a true rarity these days, a really good exploitationer, the sort of thing that would rule at drive-ins if they still existed. Mar 12, 2008 Full Review Reece Pendleton Chicago Reader While few of the paper-thin characters register long enough to make much of an impression, Diesel carries the movie with his unsettling mix of Zen-like tranquillity and barely controlled rage. Mar 12, 2008 Full Review Michael D. Reid Victoria Times Colonist (B.C., Canada) A noisy, testosterone-charged and utterly nonsensical mess of a movie. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Dan DiNicola The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) The equivalent of a drive-in special audiences savored in the '50s, this is no Rebel Without a Cause, but it will end up being a summer sensation with teens. Rated: B- Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times Cohen's fast-paced, stylish direction pushes the hot and heavy excitement to the maximum, making the breakneck auto races, high-octane hijacks and crash-bang cop chases absolutely electrifying to watch. samantha Loved being able to see this amazing artwork on the big screen again can’t wait for the newest movie to come out. Grew up watching these movies I’ll keep coming back every time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Kimberly D. Loved it even more all these years later. RIP Paul Walker. Such a loss of a beautiful & talented human. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/21 Full Review Erin The best movie since The Godfather. Cannot be topped. Reminds me of 12 angry men. Just brutally clever, surprisingly endearing, and devastatingly cruel. Love. Must see of the summer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/21 Full Review 91 M Most of the stuff related to cars and automotive technology is wrong but the film is still corny and awesome. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Professional D I love this film it is probably the best out of all of the films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Jamie S “You can have any brew you like, as long as it's a Corona.” Possibly the most 2001 film there is, and I freaking love it. Somehow the nostalgia from seeing this at 15 in the cinema is like NOS for my opinion and rating of this film. Clearly it is a very poor man’s Point Break with cars, but if you are going to make a poor man’s version of anything then make it of a five-star masterpiece like Point Break. I had a great time! “Look at this snowman right here.” No crust, how old is Paul Walker? Is ‘tuna’ code or what? Paul Walker is a terrible actor in this (and many other films) but it kind of works alongside all the silliness. He makes Vin Diesel seem like De Niro. “You never had me. You never had your car.” Vin Diesel had early 00s cool down pat, love him as Dom with all his semi-prophetic ramblings… absolute quote machine. “Yowl. [sniff sniff]. I smell… skanks.” Michelle Rodriguez is so awesome in her lane, always a fan. I love her as Letty, even if she is always Letty (or Ana Lucia, I guess). I feel like Jordana Brewster is better in this that the subsequent films, plus 🔥 Hector!!! Noel Gugliemi is always a welcome sight. I thought I had seen lots of his films and then realised he has done well over 100, I haven’t even scratched the surface. Dare I say more Ja Rule, please 😂 That banging early 00s soundtrack, absolute time machine. ‘Pov City Anthem baby’ 🔥🔥🔥 Then Ja Rule drops in on the credits 👌 All films get a better rating from me when they needle drop a Santana track, ‘Evil Ways’ is such a classic! I concur, Brian Earl Spilner is absolutely a serial killer name. Still not sure how this film created such an insane franchise, it was all so spiritual… “For those 10 seconds or less, I'm free.” Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
