Critics Consensus

Sleek and shiny on the surface, The Fast and the Furious recalls those cheesy teenage exploitation flicks of the 1950s.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media This is a bad, bad movie. Skip it. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Todd McCarthy Variety A gritty and gratifying cheap thrill, Rob Cohen's high-octane hot-car meller is a true rarity these days, a really good exploitationer, the sort of thing that would rule at drive-ins if they still existed. Mar 12, 2008 Full Review Reece Pendleton Chicago Reader While few of the paper-thin characters register long enough to make much of an impression, Diesel carries the movie with his unsettling mix of Zen-like tranquillity and barely controlled rage. Mar 12, 2008 Full Review Michael D. Reid Victoria Times Colonist (B.C., Canada) A noisy, testosterone-charged and utterly nonsensical mess of a movie. Rated: B- Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times Cohen's fast-paced, stylish direction pushes the hot and heavy excitement to the maximum, making the breakneck auto races, high-octane hijacks and crash-bang cop chases absolutely electrifying to watch. samantha Loved being able to see this amazing artwork on the big screen again can’t wait for the newest movie to come out. Grew up watching these movies I’ll keep coming back every time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Kimberly D. Loved it even more all these years later. RIP Paul Walker. Such a loss of a beautiful & talented human. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/21 Full Review Erin The best movie since The Godfather. Cannot be topped. Reminds me of 12 angry men. Just brutally clever, surprisingly endearing, and devastatingly cruel. Love. Must see of the summer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/21 Full Review Chapman S This movie is way too underrated. From the first frame to the last frame it was absolute perfection. The only thing I didn't like about it were the villains. Who puts on a bad boy smile while shooting someone? Other than that, it's a great movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/25 Full Review Oliver J Fast & Furious” (originally The Fast and the Furious) speeds onto the screen with the roar of turbocharged engines and the pulse of early-2000s street culture. Director Rob Cohen delivers a neon-lit blend of underground racing, action, and testosterone-fueled loyalty that defined a generation of car enthusiasts. Vin Diesel’s breakout performance as Dominic Toretto oozes charisma and danger, while Paul Walker’s turn as undercover cop Brian O’Conner brings a surprisingly earnest core to the film’s high-octane chaos. The chemistry between the two is undeniable, giving the movie more emotional traction than its premise might suggest. That said, the plot races on autopilot at times, borrowing heavily from Point Break and relying on clichés as much as NOS. The dialogue occasionally sputters, and the movie’s attempts at depth sometimes stall amid the tire smoke and adrenaline. Still, as a pure action ride, The Fast and the Furious is impossible to deny. It’s flashy, fun, and unapologetically over-the-top — a film that knows exactly what it wants to be: loud, fast, and full of attitude. Verdict: A solid three-star thrill ride that laid the groundwork for one of Hollywood’s most unlikely — and enduring — franchises. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/11/25 Full Review Stephen A I came to the party 24 years late. But... despite my reluctance in 2001, its not actually that bad... Recognised Paul Walker from Pleasantville... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/25 Full Review Read all reviews
