Critics Consensus

Though Lillard is uncannily spot-on as Shaggy, Scooby Doo is a tired live-action update, filled with lame jokes.

Even its look is awfully cheesy and clunky, the SFX notwithstanding. Scooby Doo makes Stuart Little seem a Citizen Kane in comparison. Go to Full Review

Scooby-Doo knows when to take itself seriously and when to laugh at itself -- even if its audience isn't laughing along at every gag. Go to Full Review

... every inch a live action cartoon with a little contemporary self-awareness and about as much substance as a Scooby snack. Go to Full Review

The pitch-perfect casting of the members of Mystery Inc. is what makes Scooby-Doo compulsively rewatchable. The plot is serviceable, and most adults will be able to unmask the villain long before the Mystery Inc. team does, but that doesn’t matter. Go to Full Review

Kenya J @K3ny4 5d I personally like this movie because when I need something to watch that’s not deeply plot involved or as something to put on when I don’t know what to watch. The original cartoons will always be better however i cant easily find places to watch these. The casting was a great pick and the cgi scooby isn’t that bad. See more Nathan J. @TribianiRamoray Oct 25 Rating: 5.7/10 Scooby-Doo is a bizarre, messy, and fascinatingly weird time capsule of early 2000s filmmaking. Despite its chaotic script and tonal mess, the film has developed a strange cult-classic charm, thanks in part to Matthew Lillard's perfect casting as Shaggy Rogers. Highlights - Iconic Performance: Matthew Lillard's Shaggy is a career-defining role, capturing the character's essence perfectly. - Meta-Premise: The screenplay's self-aware, meta premise is clever and sharp, poking fun at the gang's personality conflicts. - Production Design: The film's colorful, early 2000s aesthetic and creative production design make for a visually interesting experience. Criticisms - Tonal Mess: The film's tone is all over the place, struggling to balance kid-friendly adventure and dark, R-rated comedy. - Poor CGI: The early 2000s CGI has aged poorly, with Scooby-Doo and the monsters looking like poorly rendered video game characters. - Miscasting: Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar are miscast as Fred and Daphne, feeling like one-dimensional caricatures. Verdict Scooby-Doo is a weird, clunky, and baffling movie that's earned its strange cult status. While it's a flawed film, Matthew Lillard's performance and the film's nostalgic charm make it a curiosity worth watching. See more Zachary S Oct 24 This movie might not be absolute cinema, but it is a movie that you have to see at least once in your life. See more matthias s @Thescreenasvor Oct 22 Man, Scooby-Doo (2002) is pure childhood bottled up in 90 minutes of chaotic fun. I grew up on this movie, and honestly, it still slaps. The casting? Spot-on — like they ripped the gang straight out of the cartoons. Scooby’s animation surprisingly still holds up, and the film oozes that goofy Saturday morning energy. James Gunn clearly knew what he was doing when he wrote this — the humor hits, the mystery’s fun, and the sets? Absolutely insane. It feels like a theme park ride and a cartoon come to life. It’s campy in all the right ways — a live-action fever dream that totally works. Even if you’re not a Scooby fan, this cult classic will win you over. See more Marissa C Oct 13 Honestly cuter than it gets credit for. It’s not trying to be something it’s not - if you want something entertaining, very silly, and endearing, this is the right pick. Not to mention some fun nostalgia. See more Read all reviews
