A man arrives in a small town. At first, no one knows his name; no one knows where he came from. The locals want to call him a stranger, but when they meet him, he makes them feel quite the opposite. Joshua (Tony Goldwyn) is seemingly everywhere at once, making the kind of impression that few have ever felt. But it is exactly this influence that creates a division between the stubbornly orthodox Father Tardone and the well-meaning but less-than-confident Father Pat.

Joshua is well-intentioned, but too heavy-handed.

It's a persuasive spiritual journey, sentimental at times but never hopelessly cloying. Go to Full Review

Christians sensitive to a reductionist view of their Lord as a luv-spreading Dr. Feelgood or omnipotent slacker will feel vastly more affronted than secularists, who might even praise God for delivering such an instant camp classic. Go to Full Review

One key problem with these ardently Christian storylines is that there is never any question of how things will turn out. Go to Full Review

awlabrador L 1d Huge waste of my time and money. I've never been a big fan of Christian movies -- too simplistic and simple-minded, with all the moral subtlety of a preacher beating you about the head with a Bible. That's not to say that Christian movies can't be great -- the Chosen, the Passion of the Christ, and Silence are at the top of my list of how it should be done. But Joshua isn't it. It pretty much hits all the bad points of poorly-written, poorly thought out Christian movies. Yeah, the guy's a very poorly disguised Jesus. Everything's better when he's around. Oh, and the Catholic priest is the usual Catholic-hater's view of Catholics. See more John A @ExcessMale 08/10/2023 The casting is pretty good and the contemporary premise for the subject matter is interesting and all but this film lacks the subtle and thought-provoking arthouse touch it needs from a serious director. See more 09/14/2019 Wondrous at a bland scale with easy religious though ever surprising, unidentifiable speculation that speaks volume for unity and separately motivated by whatever faith simply lies there.
