Susan Walker Toronto Star Luther is rarely presented as anything other than a preacher. He preaches even in casual conversation. Rated: 3/5 Oct 22, 2004 Full Review Leah McLaren Globe and Mail About as swashbuckling as a history lesson gets. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 22, 2004 Full Review Michael Booth Denver Post A few too many amateurish techniques and oversimplified confrontations hold Luther back a notch or two from greatness, and stamp it instead as entertaining Lutheran cheerleading. Daniel J Simple & enjoyable. A reasonable treatment of the subject matter, all things considered. If you are even considering this type of movie to begin with, then you will probably enjoy it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/23 Full Review da n One of the louseist scene..Did edris elba read the whole script? Fight scene? Killer is older then theelba but elba was so slow.should be half a star rating. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review jed B Too long, factually incorrect throughout, not at all credible from start to finish. 3/10 at best Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/23 Full Review Howard M Good acting. Fair story, albeit slight deviation from what was expected. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A great look at the life of the man who we credit for kickstarting the Protestant Reformation. The movie follows Luther from his entry into the monastery until 1530--the Augsburg Confession. It takes a historically accurate, yet entertaining look at his life. It puts in all the main figures around Luther, such as Prince Frederick, Charles V, Johann von Staupitz, Melanchthon, Spalatin, and Karlstadt, all without overwhelming the viewer. It captures a good amount of Luther's theology and the main quarrel with Rome--indulgences. It leaves out the messier parts of his story, which would be too much to put into the movie anyway. While it does have to telescope many of the events of his life and the evolution of thought, it helps you understand what was happening and his thought process. The only quibble I would have with this movie was the casting of Joseph Fiennes for Luther. Not that Fiennes is a bad actor, rather, that he doesn't play him angrily enough. Luther had a notoriously bad temper. Other than that, this is one of my favorite movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member While it takes some minor historical liberties to keep the narrative flowing, it is an excellent film biography Martin Luther.
