Alain E This is a pessimistic film with the thesis that nothing works in modern western societies. Location is modern Austria with participants both native born and significant number of immigrants from Southern Europe. There are some scenes of explicit sex in the beginning, but this hardly characterizes the movie. The main point is that none of the couples we are introduced to are in harmony. In the very beginning we are witnessing a car crash. After the titles, we are let to know that the couple affected at the time subsequently split and the man, years later is visiting the city, calls up the woman and reconnect, mostly by having sex for a few days. Then we get to know more residents in the same apartment complex who are also involved in unsatisfactory relationships or split their time between their official partner and side activities. The characters are described well and their behavior avoids exaggerations. But the only person who appears to be in equilibrium is a middle aged guy who plays alone in the yard with his dog. After we get to know a few more couples we come full circle and we witness another motor vehicle accident involving the man we met in the beginning, now on his way to the airport. He survives again. The Austrian society would be in peril though, if this movie accurately reflected what is going on. We are never given an explanation why the movie is named after the supergiant star in the constellation of Scorpius. Possibly because it signifies conflict. (In Greek the name means the opposite of Ares, whose Latin name is Mars). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review SGopal S Few of the movies are raw and intense on the theme of alluring adultery, {Eyes Wide Shut (1999) } the story or the plot depicts ordinary characters and immediately connects to we the middle class citizen's fantasies arising from our boredom. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Three stories connected by an accident. The women are vulnerable, beautiful, strong -- the men are exhausting, fucked, human. The movie beyond the obvious sexual and dysfunctional relationships seems to be a cautionary tale of human fallacies and how we can so easily become disenchanted with life. The antiseptic treatment of the film itself is creepy enough to realize what urban hell truly is and the fragility of the human psyche. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie came as a surprise to me. I was just surfing through Tubi and found this movie on the list and just watched it, and just loved the movie. The flow was so smooth and characterization so well done. The interlocking between characters and incidents is so good. Direction, Photography was well done and top-class performance. Must Watch!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member How this turkey of film won awards can only be explained by incest of the political kind in European cinema. I don't recall which filmmaker first explored this type of non-linear drama that links up strangers, but it has been done FAR better before, and by now, it is gutless and hackneyed. I watched this for free and felt cheated. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member At times interesting, but flawed film.
