In this film based on actual events, Karla Homolka (Laura Prepon) and Paul Bernardo (Misha Collins) seem like a typical suburban couple -- that is, until Paul is implicated in a series of disturbing killings. It turns out Karla married Paul knowing he had raped and killed several girls, including her own sister, Tammy (Cherilyn Hayres). As the evidence mounts against Paul, Karla is questioned by Dr. Arnold (Patrick Bauchau) about her level of involvement in the murders.

John Monaghan Detroit Free Press Things in the movie, like the slasher movie music cues, hint that Karla has exploitation in its veins. The reasons for making it -- and seeing it -- remain more than slightly suspect. Rated: 2/4 Mar 16, 2007 Full Review Geoff Pevere Toronto Star You can call it guilty of exploitation, tastelessness or insensitivity if you like, but its greatest failing is a certain deadly pointlessness. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 20, 2006 Full Review Rick Groen Globe and Mail No audience, Canadian or otherwise, will learn anything here outside of the macabre facts. Worse, they won't feel anything either, not even -- and this is inexcusable -- for the victims themselves. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 20, 2006 Full Review Mark Palermo The Coast (Halifax, Nova Scotia) Movies about real life serial killers are released frequently. It's when they're missing grief that they become an insult to the memory of the dead. Dec 8, 2006 Full Review Angela Baldassarre Sympatico.ca Because we only see one side of the events, "Karla" rings unconvincing and sensationalistic. Jan 24, 2006 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...hopelessly inept and thoroughly awful... Rated: 1/4 Jan 22, 2006 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie is ridiculous...trying to portray this scum as a victim instead of a very willing partner during the rape of her own sister and 2 other victims frankly the entire movie is a insult to the victims and everyone involved in its creation should be greatly ashamed Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review kevin c Laura Prepon stars as infamous Canadian Karla Homolka who along with her husband Paul Bernardo, played by Mischa Collins, abducted, tortured, raped and killed many girls in Ontario. Set in prison the film wraps around her recounting of events with a psychologist who is determining her state of mind prior to her parole hearing. Fascinating, yet very disturbing to watch even though the killings are off camera, but the degradation and misogyny on display is tough to watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoy serial killer movies. This is definitely a Lifetime Original piece of poop. I lost interest, not only from the poor character development and story line, but because it's supposed to take place in 1990 where obvious props and background don't make sense. When Paul is in his "music studio" there is an Incubus poster hanging on the wall from the Morning View album. That was released in 2001. It's confusing and underwhelming not to mention a crime against the girls who deserved a story to remember them. Thumbbbbssssssss dooownnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Karla is a true story so you can't really fault it for how messed up it is. You know what you are in for before watching this movie if you read the description but it's still a little unsettling. That being said, Karla is a thoroughly entertaining movie. I honestly believe it should be rated NC-17 even though it doesn't actually show any of the rapes in detail. Karla is definitely not a movie you should allow children or maybe even teenagers to watch, but for us adults it's definitely worth checking out.
