Evan Williams The Australian There are many funny moments and some pleasing suspense towards the end, but as a cautionary tale about the dangers of overeating and obesity it's more likely to boost sales at the candy bar. That may be one good reason for watching it at home. Rated: 3/5 Jun 27, 2014 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) Writer-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have expanded a 30-page children's book by Judi and Ron Barrett into a 3D animated feature which boasts intricate design and goofy humour. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 26, 2009 Full Review Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs is visually inventive and exuberant, and has some neat running gags. But its characterisations are a little disappointing. Rated: 3/5 Nov 26, 2009 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a fun, larger-than-life premise that is, at the outset, employed to compulsively watchable effect... Rated: 2/4 Jun 18, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Director/writer team Phil Lord and Chris Miller cobble a story around the storybook’s premise but it’s the whimsical imagery of raining hamburgers, a Jell-O mold castle, an ice-cream winter wonderland, and a spaghetti tornado that carries the film. John F Insanely clever humor that everyone can laugh with. The movie has very good father-son aspects. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Comedy F This is just as good as the book Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review TheMovieSearch R Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs stands as a shining example of how animated comedies can balance absurd humor with genuine heart. What begins as a hilariously ridiculous idea — a machine that makes food rain from the sky — quickly transforms into a full-blown cinematic treat that’s as visually inventive as it is emotionally satisfying. The film knows exactly what it wants to be: a celebration of creativity, chaos, and compassion, all wrapped up in a bright and buoyant package that never overstays its welcome. The animation bursts with personality, bringing every edible disaster to life with infectious energy. Every frame feels alive — from spaghetti tornadoes to pancake avalanches — and there’s an imaginative spark in how each visual gag plays out. It’s the kind of movie that rewards rewatching, because the background details and playful designs are just as funny and clever as the main story itself. Flint Lockwood, the film’s eccentric inventor, is one of the most endearing animated protagonists of the 2000s. His blend of awkward enthusiasm and heartfelt sincerity makes him instantly relatable, especially for anyone who’s ever dreamed too big or felt misunderstood. The supporting characters — from the earnest weather reporter Sam Sparks to Flint’s stoic dad — all contribute to the emotional heartbeat of the story, grounding the madness in moments of warmth and humanity. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller deserve enormous credit for their precise handling of tone. They manage to juggle outrageous comedy, slapstick action, and authentic emotion without losing balance. The pacing is brisk, the dialogue crackles with wit, and the humor feels fresh even years later. Beneath all the laughs, the film carries subtle messages about ambition, integrity, and the importance of staying true to yourself — lessons that feel effortlessly woven into the chaos rather than tacked on. What’s most impressive about Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is how confidently it embraces its own silliness. It doesn’t shy away from being outrageous or over-the-top — instead, it finds beauty and meaning within that madness. The result is a film that’s both a parody and a love letter to the imagination of childhood, and it captures that rare mix of cleverness and sincerity that makes animated films timeless. Even after all these years, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs remains an irresistible blend of heart and hilarity. It’s funny, charming, and endlessly creative — the kind of animated movie that can lift your mood no matter your age. Few family films manage to be this imaginative, this funny, and this full of heart all at once, making it a true modern classic in every sense. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/25 Full Review Jack S. When I watched it before, I was scared about the storm part, but it’s actually very cool. I TOTALLY recommend this movie.
