Rated 2/5 Stars •  Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Movie is so insistent on inflicting and hammering the lead actress with the most horrific, hysterical, cringe-worthy & corny of melodramatics that every last ounce of real emotion ends up being drained from it. The look is polished and handsome, the music succeeds in invoking the spirit of Joe Hisaishi, BUT it is way too calculated and over-directed, even unintentionally laugh-inducing in the serious parts. Liu Ling Ling almost single-handedly salvaged it because she is so good at balancing the drama and the comedy - she can be spontaneous even in the most over-cooked of scenes. And QiYuWu has the good sense to play it subtle and ground the film in some semblance of reality. For the most part, however, this is a schizophrenic little film which aspires to be a contemporary recreation of the traditional Chinese opera, but instead resides in an awkward place between parody and imitation.
