Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The characters are honest and true, the fight sequences are brutal and raw, while the central themes being delivered in the denouement pack a major emotional wallop. Rated: 3/4 Jan 27, 2012 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Its three leads certainly deserve consideration for their artfulness in being able to infuse it with intimations of quality. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 26, 2011 Full Review Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) Grainy, hand-held cinematography can't lend authenticity to the forced emotion. Rated: 2/5 Oct 25, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review These stars deliver the goods in abundance, even if audiences must suffer through some obligatory training montages to get it. Rated: 3/4 Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The MMA action is bone-jarring and brutal and you can feel each punch and kick. But at it’s core this is a brilliant and heartfelt character study brought to life by some strong acting and a rock solid script. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The journey the characters take to get there sucks you in and melts the inherent predictability away. Jedi D Sincerely, if this movie had been released 20 years earlier, it would've been nominated across the board. Brilliant performances by Hardy and Edgerton, but the supporting cast lead by Nolte, Morrison, and Grillo is just as great. Nolte's portrayal of Paddy Conlin will have you emotional in every scene. The script is rich with story and substance, the directing is stellar, and the score is powerful. Easily one of the top 3 fight movies of all time; along side Rocky and Raging Bull. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Santi C Beautiful movie, amazing mma scenes, one of my favorite ones to watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review John B First half of the movie is really good, with some great acting - especially from Nick Nolte who is awesome - and you're not really sure what direction the story takes. Unfortunately in the second half - the BIIIIIG fighting tournament - of the movie, the story goes the usual/obvious Hollywood way and turns into a too long MMA version of the Rocky sequels of the 1980/90s. So you more or less know what will happen and how the movie will end, which makes the second half quite boring. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Audience Member Hits all the right feels while showcasing amazing performances by Hardy, Edgerton and Nolte turning this film into one of my favorites of the past 2 decades. A must see even if you aren't a MMA fan. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Kat A Probably my favorite movie of all time. Sibling rivalry subverted and yet at its most basic, a depth of emotion that still seizes my heart on the 10th rewatch, a confrontation of when/if we deserve redemption and forgiveness, and the depths we'll go to make amends to those we love. There is no perfect movie, but this one is pretty close. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Memphis A Absolute must watch for all mma fans like myself Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
