Audience Member Is there anything I could say about this masterpiece that DeCoteau himself does not communicate through his groundbreaking film? I say with little doubt that Haunted Frat is the beginning of the greatest revolution in cinema since Citizen Kane, or perhaps even as far back as Battleship Potemkin. No other director would have the guts to open on such a daring sequence like the fifteen minutes spent by one of our scandalously dressed characters aimlessly wandering the halls of his frat in a dream, capturing a pervasive sense of the unknown. Who is he? What does he search for? The use of the unknown to grip the viewer is a powerful tool, and leaves us grappling with the unanswered questions the film presents. The sensual showers of the frat boys are no mere fanservice - they are a statement on the changing role of sexuality in media. Our lithe, well muscled underwear clad heroes fall one by one to the seductress spirit, an unmistakeable metaphor for the multimedia conglomerate Disney's growing entertainment monopoly, and how they have begun to reshape the culture and meaning of sexuality through a corporate lens. The ending symbolizes the uncertain future of entertainment, with the only certainty being that Smiley's essay, a veiled symbol of today's indie filmmaker, will never be completed, as the titans of media begin to dominate the simultaneously shrinking and expanding film culture of the modern world.
