Did people actually think this was scary 61 years ago? A lot of the elements of modern horror are here - ouija boards, ghosts, haunted houses, etc. But the enjoyment of this movie comes not from the thrills and chills it purports to contain but considering that movie making like this may once have been considered frightening. It comes across like an extra long episode of BEWITCHED, complete with a small role for the Wicked Witch of the West herself, Margaret Hamilton. It held my interest, and I mildly enjoyed it as a relic or a fossil of by-gone times, but if you're looking for actual suspense, stick with PSYCHO, which happened to be released the same year. This was remade in 2001, and while I haven't seen the updated version, my niece insists it is quite scary. See more Read all reviews
