However, not long after they move in they realize that the house is haunted by 12 ghosts and run by a housekeeper (Margaret Hamilton) who works in the dark arts. CodyZamboni William Castle's cheap, campy , but energetic scare show, has enough fun factors that it ends up a pleasant time waster. The old school scares, likeable family characters, and a ghostly mystery make it one of Castle's better efforts. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review SR C Not a bad movie for a production that is older than I am. It has an ending that I did not see coming and that is always a "win" in my book Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Jeff M One of the things I love about watching classic movies is wondering how audiences reacted to them at the time of their releases. Did people actually think this was scary 61 years ago? A lot of the elements of modern horror are here - ouija boards, ghosts, haunted houses, etc. But the enjoyment of this movie comes not from the thrills and chills it purports to contain but considering that movie making like this may once have been considered frightening. It comes across like an extra long episode of BEWITCHED, complete with a small role for the Wicked Witch of the West herself, Margaret Hamilton. It held my interest, and I mildly enjoyed it as a relic or a fossil of by-gone times, but if you're looking for actual suspense, stick with PSYCHO, which happened to be released the same year. This was remade in 2001, and while I haven't seen the updated version, my niece insists it is quite scary. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Melissa L I think this was a great little movie. It's a little cheesy, but it's pretty good and has an ending with a twist. Once again, I haven't any idea why the ratings are so low. I recommend it! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Joseph D I actually saw the remake first, & while I enjoyed that film, the original's camp nature & fun "Illusion-O" gimmick, give it a charm modern films seem to lack. And while most of the cast is a bit flat, the presence of the Wicked Witch herself, Margaret Hamilton, gave them the pep up they needed. What I wouldn't give to see this as William Castle intended, in a prop filled movie house, stage & all. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Andre G Old school black and white 3D movie. I didn't even know they had 3D back then. It was a good storyline. I liked seeing the low budget special effects they were trying to do. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
