Mate P 1:42.08 is George Lucas trying out different styles of cinematography, editing and sound design. There were lots of wide shots letting the car pass by or following the car. But what I found interesting are the shots when the camera is rigged onto the car. That and the closeups inside the car are definitely inspired by John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix released in the same year as this. The editing also went through different styles. Starting with slow cuts, then leaning into fast ones. What is new here, is the sound design. There were instances when the sound was used from the previous or the next take. This is the most ambitious, complex and entertaining short film I've seen from George Lucas so far. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/25 Full Review Audience Member A perfect technical exercise. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A nice variety of camera angles/shots with some quick cutting to enhance tense moments with the car and driver. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Great editing and camera work Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I suppose it's succesful at what it wants to be: simply to record a racecar driving. Nothing more. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review david h USC film student George Lucas always liked cars. He hung around Carroll Shelby's firm enough to convince the Shelby Daytona designer, Pete Brock, to drive a borrowed Lotus around the Riverside track. There are no words in the movie, but see if you can read Pete's lips when he spins out. Nice cinematography for a student. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
