Ken R Definitely a cut above the average B western this US/Mexico production holds interest and features good production values. Daniel Mann's direction is solid with fine-looking cinematography from Gabriel Torres, Oscar nominee screenplay writer Wendell Mayes (Anatomy of a Murder '59) lifts the dialogue slightly above average. William Holden has an active role for his age as a ranch owner and family man, driven to seek revenge and is well supported by Woody Strode and Ernest Borgnine, with Susan Hayward coming out of retirement to join the cast – scenes with Hayward and Holden are particularly well done. Maybe not a great Western, still, far better than many others of its kind. The film did not fare well but just looking at the original advertising poster would turn most people off (promoted like a cheap Italian/Spanish thing) should have been sold much better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/22 Full Review Audience Member Rancher Holden picks a select group of hard-bitten convicts to help him in his quest for revenge against the killers of his wife and children. Naturally, it doesn't go according to plan. From the era where Westerns had gotten very sour and disillusioned, lovingly photographed landscapes are this film's best feature. Certainly not the off-putting collection of ragtag villains. Hayward's last feature film is not her finest moment. It's funny how we can become compassionate towards killers (Chamaco in particular); and worse. By midpoint, some of Benedict's hired help seem more human than he is and perhaps they are. This story caught me totally off guard. Love the fact it was unpredictable. Saw this as kind of a reverse Magnificent Seven. The relationships seemed a bit forced, but with even that, this film cried out for a sequel. Too bad nobody heard. Perhaps we can hope for a modern remake? Actor selection would be paramount.
