Ben D A Breath of Fresh Air is a family-friendly comedy concerning estranged brothers (Aldo Baglio & Giovanni Calcagno) who reunite at their rustic Sicilian family farm after the death of their father (Marcello Mazzarella), whose shadow looms large over the estate. Salvo (Baglio) is the proprietor of a Milanese pizzeria who fled his southerly home as a teen, which he frequently degrades with pejoratives. However, his pizzeria is failing, and upon receiving the news of his father’s death, he reckons there is likely an inheritance waiting for him in the Mezzogiorno that may bail him out of his financial woes. Baglio is a skilled comedic actor and is a foil to his brawny younger brother, Lillo (Calcagno). His family is filled out with the passionate wife, Teresa (Lucia Ocone), motivated, but struggling daughter, Emma (Ludovica Martino), and aimless son, Enzo (Davide Calgaro). The hijinks revolve around Salvo’s untruthfulness with his family and struggles to address his childhood. It’s a pleasant movie with all of the predictable plot points. It’s perfect for the bucolic scenery and handful of laughs. It’s about as standard as it gets (it’s even on Netflix) and sometimes that’s all you need.
