Mary is 11 years old and has an insuppressible passion for cooking: she dreams of becoming a great chef. Her grandmother, Emer, with whom she has a very special relationship, encourages her to make this dream come true. But every path has its pesky obstacles, and facing them turns into quite an adventure. Mary thus begins a journey across the barriers of time, in which four generations of women come together and get to know each other truly and deeply. A delicate coming-of-age story, sprinkled with irony.

Tara Brady Irish Times Working from a script written with the Bafta-winning Dave Ingham (Charlie and Lola), D’Alò leans into Doyle’s reliable ear for the vernacular. Hand-drawn monochrome dream sequences form an intriguing subplot around the sighthound of the title. Rated: 3/5 Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian It’s a tender film that will leave only the chilliest heart unwarmed. Rated: 4/5 Jun 25, 2024 Full Review Josh Bell Crooked Marquee Never quite finds the right balance of sincerity and blarney. Rated: C+ Nov 5, 2024 Full Review Peter Martin ScreenAnarchy Effortlessly shifting into adult territory with convincing authority, the film nonetheless remains a magical adventure that keeps its feet planted firmly in reality. ... It's the rare family-friendly adventure that adults of any age will enjoy. Oct 31, 2024 Full Review Hilary A White Sunday Independent (Ireland) While it won’t win any prizes for its depiction of Mary’s slovenly male family members, its sentimental celebration of female kinship is hard to knock. Rated: 3/5 Jun 28, 2024 Full Review James Hanton FILMHOUNDS Magazine Focuses on family, heritage, and uncertainty in the face of change to provide a moving and contemplative film of relatedness. Audience Member An Irish animated film that quite surprisingly flew under the radar This actually came out in 2023 and has a great voice cast most notably Brendan Gleeson It centers on a young girl Mary, she’s only 11 years old but dreams of becoming a chef After being graded by a culinary school she’s not quite there yet But she has the love and support of her grandmother who unfortunately is very sick Mary refuses to accept it One day she meets a mysterious woman in the woods who knows her name and Mary tries to prove to her mother that this woman is real Through some form of magic she appears out of thin air like a ghost The film has amazing animation ranging from solid lines and colors to pencil sketches to something out of a Japanese anime It actually reminded me of the old animated films of the 1990s Death doesn’t have to be all bad, it’s a natural part of life after all, and everything can still be grand This rare gem of a film is beautifully drawn, briskly paced, and treats its subject matter of family, heritage, uncertainty in the face of change, grief, and loss with the utmost respect Adults of any age will enjoy along with their kids not just because of the bright colors but the maturity of it as well as celebrating female kinship Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
