Effective locations choices add to the atmosphere of the film - it's hard to imagine a more despairing piece of architecture than the exterior of the psychiatric institute. But the pacing of the story is stagnant.

The visuals add exactly the kind of polish that this prestige picture is aiming for, and although there are a few far-travelling accents in the supporting cast, the whole thing is anchored by the typically-assured Roden.
