When Sipho (Loyiso Gxwala), a boy in rural South Africa, is accused of murdering an infant, lawyer Sean Raine (Gavin Hood) offers to defend him on the grounds that the youth genuinely thought that he was killing an evil entity called a "tikoloshe." An expatriate revisiting South Africa for the first time in years, Sean has personal reasons for taking the boy's case, stemming from his guilt over an incident that happened while he was serving as a soldier.
