Critics Consensus

As beautifully crafted as it is powerfully written, A Silent Voice looks at teen bullying from a soberingly hard-hitting perspective that's uncommon for the animated medium.

Jason B Amazing, poignant, story. When a former bully tries to make up for his previous mistakes, he struggles to forgive himself. Touching and emotional. A powerful, moving film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Henry S Absolute must see. This movie brings to light many subjects that just don’t get talked about enough, raising awareness and showing how people can change. The film shows just how much mental health can affect someone and how they do manage to move past it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Seth L The only movie I've seen that perfectly shows what self-hate and isolation really looks like, and how it feels when you finally break from that. If you have not seen this film, I highly recommend you do; even if you don't watch Japanese anime, it is a very well-done movie comparing to all mediums, not just 2d animation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Cuori R A Silent Voice might just be the most emotionally powerful anime film I’ve ever seen, and in my opinion, it’s also one of the most underrated. While films like Your Name. often take the spotlight for their romance, visuals, emotional impact and fantasy, A Silent Voice tells a psychological, grounded, and painfully human story that hits much deeper. This movie isn’t for everyone. It’s slow-paced, emotionally heavy, and deals with themes like bullying, guilt, depression, suicide, and forgiveness. It doesn’t hold your hand or offer easy resolutions. That rawness is what made it resonate with me. A Silent Voice left me reflecting for years. Its message isn’t wrapped in fantasy, it’s brutally real. And that makes it feel more impactful than most other anime films I’ve seen. 9/10. Deep, uncomfortable at times, and quietly beautiful, this might not be for everyone, but for those it does reach, it leaves a lasting mark. If you can handle it, watch it atleast once. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review SSJ Z I've watched this movie countless times, it's a heartwarming story fit for the entire family, this movie is one I would recommend to not only adults but also adults, It's a story about a boy named Shoya who goes by Sho, it's a touching story that starts out with him being happy and just like any other normal boy. The story changes in mood when a deaf girl named Shoko who also goes by Sho starts to get bullied, which Shoya also takes part in until he goes too far, It's a dark and realistic story which handles mental health and the emotions of young adults in a way you don't really see in today's society. This story has absolutely no powers or anything even remotely close to powers, no super strength, no explosions, just emotions and the truth about this messed up world. It's a story everyone should watch at least once in their life, I'm about to watch it again after I post this Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review Martin A Beautiful and meaningful movie. Not a romance but still an amazing masterpiece that became part of me Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
