      Critics Consensus

Perfectly pleasant yet never particularly engaging, Adult Beginners is a mild middle-of-the-road comedy content to coast on the charms of its talented cast.

Audience Member I did not enjoy this movie. None of the great acting in the world could save the awful story and dialogue. It's a shame because three immensely talented people could not keep me engaged, it all felt contrived and wrong. Pity. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Great funny and sad at the same time movie starring Nick kroll. This movie has a lot of heart. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought this movie was really good. The story is fun and it kept my attention. The acting is great from everyone involved (except for the few times the little boy sounded like he was reading his lines from a cue card.) Editing and cinematography were good; nothing new, but no complaints. The first half of this movie tries to be more of a lighthearted comedy, but the jokes didn’t really land for me and it felt a little slow. They could’ve cut out about 15 minutes of the first half. When the second half kicks in and the film focuses on being a lighthearted drama, it gets much better. I recommend this one! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/20 Full Review Audience Member Very weak plot and a boring movie but what stood out to me the most was the very uncomfortable relationship between the two siblings. Me and my sister are very close but those two are at a point where its weird and makes you uncomfortable Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Mildly funny, slightly out of focus, but connects in a moving way at times thanks to Byrne and Kroll's chemistry. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review toby h I'm a fan of Rose Byrne and Nick Kroll, so gave this a go, It was an easy watch, with some laughs and some dryness. Worth a watch on a quiet night. Jason Bailey Flavorwire Both an enjoyably modest comedy/drama and a bit of a sales pitch for Nick Kroll, Movie Star. May 28, 2016 Full Review Brad Wheeler Globe and Mail A satisfying enough slice of semi-content suburban life ... Rated: 2.5/4 May 8, 2015 Full Review Liz Braun Toronto Sun Adult Beginners is a darkly funny indie film about family and second chances. Rated: 3.5/5 May 7, 2015 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture Adult Beginners is The Skeleton Twins with less suicidal ideation and more kids thrown into the mix. Rated: 2/5 Jul 20, 2019 Full Review Bernard Boo Way Too Indie Adult Beginners feels too stabilized and mild-mannered to warrant more than a sick-day rental. Rated: 6.5/10 Mar 14, 2019 Full Review James Clay Fresh Fiction There are plenty of crowd-pleasing moments, but it lacks the gut-punch to bring home the dramatic beats.
