Critics Consensus

After Earth is a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in sentimental sci-fi -- and the latest setback for director M. Night Shyamalan's once-promising career.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk Preachy, draggingly directed by M Night Shyamalan and just not much fun. Rated: 2/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com After Earth unfortunately still finds M. Night Shyamalan plodding through another dull, lifeless movie. Rated: C Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth. Rated: 1/5 May 2, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Regardless of the potential here, a neutral, lifeless tone prevails over every aspect, from the direction to the acting to the special FX, but especially the dull script by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta. Rated: 1/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “After Earth” is a sleep-inducing bore that hasn’t the material or performances to rise above its faults. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Cory Woodroof Lumination Network This film is sometimes-brutal survival flick that doubles as a closet-clearing of emotion for a critically injured father and his petrified son. Anthony M No surprise in today's day and age, with our modern society pushing more towards "following your heart" and "you are how you feel", that this movie did not do well. It is vastly deep, and resonates with forgotten principles of overcoming flesh and choosing something greater than your feelings and opinions and insecurities- courage, self control, patience, endurance, discipline, etc. I just hope the people that need it get to see it. And also, from a theatrical perspective, the effects are well done and they paid attention to minute details such as accents due to blended cultures in their future environment. Just an all around good movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review roger s In the beginning, it seemed quite cliché, and the ending felt similar to the start. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Cesar S the protagonist is very weak, it's annoying how much he whines throughout the film Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review David R One of the worst big budget movies ever made. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Omar R What a waste of time... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review Wayne E This movie, yet having several plot issues, drew inspiration from the writer( Will Smith) as a coming of age story and growth through drama. He gave his son Jaden Smith the role as he did in the Pursuit of Happiness & The Karate Kid which is very "Nepo", but this was Jaden's solo deput which in all fairness needed to provide him with better material. This could have been Jaden's I Am Legend but missed the mark. Overall its a good movie for the sake of showing a fathers love and admiration for his son. Great movie to watch for fathers day. Its worth a rewatch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
