Critics Consensus

After Earth is a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in sentimental sci-fi -- and the latest setback for director M. Night Shyamalan's once-promising career.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk Preachy, draggingly directed by M Night Shyamalan and just not much fun. Rated: 2/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com After Earth unfortunately still finds M. Night Shyamalan plodding through another dull, lifeless movie. Rated: C Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth. Rated: 1/5 May 2, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Regardless of the potential here, a neutral, lifeless tone prevails over every aspect, from the direction to the acting to the special FX, but especially the dull script by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta. Rated: 1/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “After Earth” is a sleep-inducing bore that hasn’t the material or performances to rise above its faults. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Cory Woodroof Lumination Network This film is sometimes-brutal survival flick that doubles as a closet-clearing of emotion for a critically injured father and his petrified son. Calisa C I have seen this movie so many times. Each time I find something more to relate to. Judge it for yourself. It is worth watching. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Stephen C Success in 1 hour and 40 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated PG-13 for Some Disturbing Images and Sci-Fi Action Violence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $60,500,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Hughe J After Earth was released in theatres in 2013 and stars Will Smith as Cypher Raige (I'm serious), his son Jaden as Kitai Raige (not any better), a bunch of people whose names I don't remember and was somehow directed by M Night Shyamalan. So the basic plot is that Earth was abandoned 1000 years ago and is now really scary. While transporting an equally scary alien the Raige's ship crashes onto scary Earth forcing Little Raige to travel around and be scared of everything, cause it's scary. Daddy Raige actually says something to the effect "that everything on this planet has evolved to kill you", but humans left 1000 years ago so how would the planet know to do that? Whatever, this movie is terrible. The acting is just horrendous, the plot is idiotic, the CGI is PS2 quality, and if Will Smith wrote this script he should throw out his computer and never touch one again. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/21/25 Full Review Salha A Very boring movie, no story or purpose to the movie, boring acting, boring directing, boring dialogue. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/25 Full Review Anthony B Terrible. I could not stand to watch it when I first saw it upon release. I decided to try it again as it was on a streaming network...and realized that it was just as awful as the first time. The acting is embarrassing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/28/25 Full Review Movie M I enjoyed this movie a lot! It's annoying that people can't just enjoy a movie anymore like we did when we rented DVDs and VHS, regardless of who was in it, if it had a big run in theaters, etc. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
