Critics Consensus

After Earth is a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in sentimental sci-fi -- and the latest setback for director M. Night Shyamalan's once-promising career.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk Preachy, draggingly directed by M Night Shyamalan and just not much fun. Rated: 2/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com After Earth unfortunately still finds M. Night Shyamalan plodding through another dull, lifeless movie. Rated: C Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth. Rated: 1/5 May 2, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Regardless of the potential here, a neutral, lifeless tone prevails over every aspect, from the direction to the acting to the special FX, but especially the dull script by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta. Rated: 1/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “After Earth” is a sleep-inducing bore that hasn’t the material or performances to rise above its faults. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Cory Woodroof Lumination Network This film is sometimes-brutal survival flick that doubles as a closet-clearing of emotion for a critically injured father and his petrified son. Pedro Henrique C After Earth (2013) is a story that has no appeal whatsoever, a science fiction film that fails to deliver anything interesting. The protagonists are actually cool to follow, but it's a pretty bad movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/25 Full Review keven q Hmm. I wasn't expecting much, from the ratings. Boy, are there a lot of dumb people in the world. I can only guess this is like Soccer, where everyone loves it- but it sucks. Everyone hates this movie- but it's really good. I don't like Celebrity Nepotism and I think that's the underlying reason but white people are too passive aggressive to say that's the reason and will chalk it up to... Whatever. The story's good, the acting is good. Jaden somewhat overacts and it can be grating in that regard- but he's young and does fine. M Night's 'look' of the movie is great. Could've maybe made the alien a bigger part but it was enjoyable. I'd keep it even if I didn't know M directed it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/25 Full Review Jordan S A guilty pleasure for me Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review Audience Member After Earth is the epitome of what a great movie was supposed to look like. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/12/25 Full Review Adit K Underrated. Think of it as The Lion King with spaceships and more awkward father-son bonding. Best movie of 2013. By far. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review Calisa C I have seen this movie so many times. Each time I find something more to relate to. Judge it for yourself. It is worth watching.
