What to Know

Critics Consensus

After Earth is a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in sentimental sci-fi -- and the latest setback for director M. Night Shyamalan's once-promising career.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk Preachy, draggingly directed by M Night Shyamalan and just not much fun. Rated: 2/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com After Earth unfortunately still finds M. Night Shyamalan plodding through another dull, lifeless movie. Rated: C Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth. Rated: 1/5 May 2, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Regardless of the potential here, a neutral, lifeless tone prevails over every aspect, from the direction to the acting to the special FX, but especially the dull script by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta. Rated: 1/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “After Earth” is a sleep-inducing bore that hasn’t the material or performances to rise above its faults. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Cory Woodroof Lumination Network This film is sometimes-brutal survival flick that doubles as a closet-clearing of emotion for a critically injured father and his petrified son. Audience Member I thought this movie was terrible and Will Smith’s worst performance. Now I see it’s an M. Night Shyamalan movie and it makes perfect sense. The director with the uncanny way of pulling the worst from the best actors. Someone put Leo DiCaprio in an M. Night film and let’s see how he pulls the worst performance of all time. It is not the actors’ fault; the common denominator is always this director. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review John S Absolute garbage and a total waste of time to watch...unless you are into bad acting and hearing/seeing Jayden Smith whine and cry throughout the movie (similar to what he did in the equally bad "Karate Kid" movie). In fact, the ONLY reason why Jaden Smith is in this movie is due to his father Will Smith who also has a role in it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Audience Member The begginning is the worst part because it just starts explaining all the premise without giving the audience the chance to notice anything. The movie in general gives you a lot of exposition. The premise is generic, with troubled father-son relationship. But I found it watchable and a bit entertaining. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Tyler N I must have strange taste because I found this entertaining, fast-paced, and fun. Jaden isn’t a natural actor but he didn’t lack effort. You could tell he put everything he had into the role. Will’s acting was on the money, as usual. Just a fun and simple SyFY movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Martina H A nice, entertaining movie, but unfortunately nothing more. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Audience Member Anger manament will smith and his talentless son are terrible. his son couldnt act his way into a porno let alone a lead in a movie. plus supporting abusive jerks isnt my thing ... garbage Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
