TheMovieSearch R Watching Against the Dark, starring Steven Seagal, is a harsh reminder of how far some action stars have fallen from their prime. Seagal, once a dominant figure in the 90s action scene, seems completely disengaged here, and the film does little to preserve any sense of his earlier charisma or intensity. For fans who remember his heyday, it’s disheartening to see him attached to a movie that struggles so profoundly on nearly every level. The screenplay is a chaotic mess, with plot points that feel half-baked and entirely disconnected. It’s as if the writers were distracted by outside concerns or simply didn’t care about crafting a coherent story. Scenes shift abruptly, motivations are murky, and the pacing is erratic. There’s no rhythm to the narrative, leaving the audience confused and disengaged from the very beginning. Any potential tension or suspense evaporates almost immediately under the weight of such inconsistent writing. Direction and editing don’t help matters. The film seems rudderless, lacking focus or a clear vision. Scenes sometimes drag without purpose, while others feel rushed or poorly staged. The action sequences, which should be the film’s centerpiece given Seagal’s involvement, are awkwardly choreographed and rely on cheap camera tricks rather than engaging combat or tension. Even moments that should feel thrilling are undercut by clunky execution and lackluster cinematic technique. Seagal himself delivers a performance that is lethargic and uninspired. His presence, which once could carry an entire film, now feels like a liability. He lacks energy, urgency, or any semblance of commitment to his character, making it difficult for the audience to invest in any stakes or conflicts. If this was meant to be a comeback, it fails spectacularly, and it’s hard to see how even dedicated fans could sit through it without frustration. The concept and plot, though superficially promising—a group of survivors navigating a vampire-like apocalypse—are poorly realized. The film never establishes a believable sense of threat or stakes. Characters are underdeveloped, dialogue is stilted, and any attempts at suspense fall flat. From the opening minutes to the conclusion, the movie feels like it’s drifting aimlessly, unsure of whether it wants to be a horror-action flick, a sci-fi adventure, or a straightforward thriller. Ultimately, Against the Dark is a film that fails in nearly every aspect. From the screenplay to the direction to Seagal’s lackluster performance, it’s a disjointed and forgettable experience. Even those with nostalgia for Seagal’s earlier career will struggle to find anything redeeming here. For anyone seeking a coherent story, engaging action, or credible suspense, this film is best avoided entirely. It’s a painful reminder that not every action star can sustain their legacy, and sometimes the results are as flat and disappointing as this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/25 Full Review Christopher J Great Action But Not Enough Variety The Whole Movie Is In Only 2 Locations And This Movie Starts To Get Super Repetitive Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Jo P this is a terrible film. Two bland locations are used to portray a world over-run by vampire/mutants. There is no real context just a short voice-over by one of the main characters explaining that the world has been overtaken by a virus. A film made on the cheap, with an appalling script written by a literate infant. At one point a key character is explaining to the others just how bad things are.
