After years of poverty and bad luck in inner-city Taipei, Taiwan, a woman (Chou Shio-min) decides to change her family's surname in the hopes of starting fresh. Unfortunately, the only result of their new name is that her son, Ah Chung (Liu Sheng-Chung), gets ridiculed by his classmates. In desperation, the woman tells her son that he can change the family's terrible fortune through his own piety. So he joins a religious group with uncomfortably close ties to organized crime.
