Esteban S A highly underrated movie. Superlative photography and breathtaking recreations of XVII battles. At times it is like watching paintings coming alive. Epic sword fighting when gunpowder was taking its first steps on the battlefield. Fantastic depictions of the legendary "Tercios." A must-watch for history fans and anyone looking for a take on historical (and fictional) events that don't revolve around France or England (yes, there were other nations back then too). You should certainly give it a try! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Samuel R Alatriste is a cinematic masterpiece. Hands down a favorite of all time for fencers and historians. The costumes are wonderful, the dialogue is intelligent, and the fights are astounding (and accurate). You can also stop this film at almost any time and it looks like a painting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/23 Full Review Mike T Excellent and evocative retelling of the figure from the novels. Superb rendering of Seventeenth Century Spain, starting with the triumph at Breda and ending with the tragedy at Rocroi. It covers an exciting period of European history, although, it does require some background knowledge of the period. If you're a bit thick, well, you'll miss a lot anyway. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles but no problem there. The action scenes are superb with top class fencing (something that Mortensen specialises in). The final recreation of the end of the Battle of Rocroi is a delight for history buffs… I'll stop there. Characterisation is very well done with believable, lovable people. There's none of the modern flouncing about and rolling on the floor like most of modern Hollywood to convey emotions and intensity. Really worth getting a dvd copy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/18/23 Full Review Manel H Is this is a film?? Quite good historical and costumes. But even the good performance of Mortensen cannot save a non understandable dully plot, full of gaps. More over the rest of the actors are lousy playing what they even don't understand. Nationalistic film only worth on consuming public money. And based on a terrible novel, or shall we better consider a bad comic? WAB ! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/08/22 Full Review Adis M One of the worst history films. The story makes almost no sense and you always ask yourself what's going on. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/05/21 Full Review Late R With a beautiful overall look and a well-cast Viggo Mortensen at the helm (there are a number of great Spanish actors/actresses that pop up, too), ‘Alatriste' is impressively intent on presenting the sad life of a 17th Century Spanish soldier as realistically as possible, covering politics, forbidden love and war with a resolute lack of passion and flair that results in a bleak, cold and depressing experience. There are scenes where this approach felt entirely appropriate and worked wonders, and others where it felt like they should have loosened up a bit. Or a lot. Ultimately, however, it's the lack of focus and bad pacing that really throws things off; long periods of time spent recounting events that are ultimately irrelevant make it feel like a much longer film than it needed to be. Jonathan Holland Variety Its visual flair and some good perfs by well-known contempo Spanish actors cannot redeem an over-episodic, over-busy script with little dramatic undertow.
