MFB Critics Monthly Film Bulletin Anyone looking for straight drama will find the narrative with its doped cigarettes, tape-recorder stratagems, copious intrigues, corny jazz jargon spoken in mid-Atlantic accents, and more or less happy ending, both unconvincing and wearying. Feb 16, 2016 Full Review Sean Axmaker Parallax View ... the elegance of the camerawork, the machinations of the plot and the fun of seeing these musicians performing onscreen keeps the film involving. Audience Member This Gothic Jazz Shakespearean film was the beginning of my love for the Criterion Classic Film collection. Every director has done a variety versions of Othello...but this is the best one!💙🌎🌼😃🌼🌎💙 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Jazzy little noir film from the early '60s features some of the jazz giants of the day including Dave Bruebeck and Charles Mingus in a nightclub mis-en-scene. Most memorable drum solo at the end of a film until 'Whiplash' ! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member just OK re-imagining of Shakespeare's 'Othello" Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member 1962. Jazz. Othello. Black&White. Warehouse Party. Swinging. Dave Brubeck. Cool. She's 29?? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member British director Basil Dearden shot this "modern" retelling of Othello in a one room set for the jazz set. It's a big London warehouse with a couple of side rooms where an all night party (featuring Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, and others) is happening. The party is in honor of Rex and Delia, a jazz pianist and singer, respectively. She has halted her career because he wanted her to and his controlling nature allows the film's Iago, drummer Johnny Cousins (played with an odd American accent by Patrick McGoohan), to set the couple against each other, with the aid of not too bright sax player, Cass. The camera whirls around the party, following different players when necessary (usually tracing Johnny's steps as he hatches his plan to get Delia to join his band), all the while observing the swinging jazz gig that is also punctuating the soundtrack. The B&W cinematography is all high contrast and almost noirish at times. McGoohan excels at pathetic but the plot machinations are a little too overt and one wonders why he doesn't get exposed earlier. A few surely controversial elements (pot-smoking, inter-racial relationships) are treated as non-issues. Yet in the end, the whole thing feels suspended in amber, not quite authentic, not quite artificial, not quite present, not quite past. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Between Mingus, Brubeck and more There's some serious star caliber in this movie. Not to mention Patrick McGoohan's absolutely killer acting job- he apparently studied for months to get the drumming right and it adds so much to the film. A well done film that does a great job of updating but never tries to reinvent the wheel. It manages to catch the hipness of Jazz along with the volatile temperament of artists.
