Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Almost Kings is quite accurately described by some as a grittier version of a John Hughes film. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 1, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Would have a higher rating if the ending wasn't such a disappointment. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member They put the functional is dysfunctional. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Not the best. Not the worst. Somewhat realistic (albeit inside) look at teenage boys and what they're capable of if left unchecked and to their own devices. The direction was competent and didn't pull any punches. The ending was hard enough because it left you wanting, but that's the ":wonder years" for you. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member ★★★ (out of four) Based on the book of the same name by Max Doty, this disturbing take on adolescent angst doesn't really add anything knew to the genre, but it does manage to create characters that are real and the pain they go through is devestatingly uncomfortable. In a small rural California town, Ted (Lorenzo James Henrie) looks up to his older brother, nicknamed Truck (Alex Frost)and his wild friends. They reluctantly let him hang out with them. Finally they allow him to participate in a game they have created. They guy who can sleep with the most freshman girls wins. The plot sounds a little like a big Hollywood teen comedy, but this is anything but that. It a film with serious consequences for the kids involved and the pain that spreads around the group is handled fervently. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Eh... The ending ruined it so much for me. Acting wasn't so bad, but I guess it just fell short in a few areas. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member At first I thought this movie had a weak ending too, then realized that climax of the movie would get lost if they continued anymore. I am guessing that if they continued on with the next day, it would feel like a build up all over again. We might be waiting around for something big to happen that would end up being less suspenseful then the actual climax. If we think about it this way, the main character's relationship with some others would probably get awkward and perhaps boring. At the same time, closer with another character. In essences, it would be un-climatic and a general disappointment. I believe that's why the director decided to end it there, giving the audience the benefit of envisioning the ending. The movie as a whole I thought was good. Needed some minor acting adjustments here and there, but had real aspects to it. Which I felt over shadowed those minor issues.
