It’s tempting to read a colonial narrative in Cléo’s reluctant surrender of the only maternal figure she has ever known. But Louise Mauroy-Panzani’s uncanny performance ensures we’re solely fixated on the child’s psychodrama.

This film deserves its 100% Rotten toms rating. Louise Mauroy Panaini, who plays six year Cleo, is a delight. And the feelings between her and Gloria, her nanny, are truly authethic and endearing. It is a journey of tender feeling, and is heading for my dvd collection.

A rare and wonderful film. Simple and restrained, profound and moving (how the director coaxed such convincing, touching acting from both leads is anyone's guess), this little film - against stiff opposition such as "Zone of Interest" - is my "movie of the year" so far. No ifs and buts - just go, enjoy, shed a tear and be astonished at how simple movie-making can produce something as perfectly convincing as this.
