Justin Chang Variety Moving ending won't satisfy all viewers, but shows admirable devotion to the film's notion that "Sometimes the poorest of men are the richest." Aug 8, 2008 Full Review Linda Barnard Toronto Star There is nothing obvious about the story, which moves carefully and unpredictably, taking us through the streets of Delhi with a view from the back of a rickshaw. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 8, 2008 Full Review Jason Anderson Globe and Mail Most of the actors invest their characters with enough warmth to render them fully human. Rated: 3/4 Aug 8, 2008 Full Review Rahul Desai Film Companion A hypnotic mix of old home footage, archival pulls and shadowy portraiture, Amal fixes its gaze on an arresting protagonist whose complex transformation alternates between foreground and background for her country's volatile surroundings. dave s Granted, the movie totters erratically between saccharine-sweet sentiment and oppressive melodrama, but Amal has a strange allure and undeniable likeability to it. When an auto-rickshaw driver provides a ride for a disheveled millionaire in search of goodness on the streets of New Delhi, a chain of unfortunate events are triggered when the rickshaw driver is named in the man's will as the sole recipient of his inheritance at the time of his death. It's easy to criticize the film for its manipulative tendencies and the unlikely details of the story, but it has much to say about what ultimately makes us wealthy in life and the perils of greed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Watched it on amazon prime and this movie makes no sense. No Indian billionaire or millionaire will ever leave his wealth to a rickshawala instead of his own kids. This movie is not worth watching as the Plot and characters are not plausible. Why would a lawyer not make a copy of the will? And, give it to the rickshawala to read it instead of reading it to him? It does not deserve the four star rating. Don't waste your time Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Jake H amazing story/acting.. a must see for EVERY human. Anyone that gives this less than 5 starts is an idiot and should not be a critic Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/20 Full Review Audience Member Can't believe i wasted my time for movie made for rich audience. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This great film will be best appreciated putting aside Hollywood expectations - it is more like a Shakespeare play.
