Nick Allen RogerEbert.com A Dorff sideshow first and foremost, "American Hero" is far too casual with Melvin's character arc, and the appeal of superhuman abilities. Rated: 1/4 Dec 11, 2015 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Writer-director Nick Love brings an enticingly quirky sensibility to the kaleidoscopic action, infusing his offbeat tale with raucous charm and a big, sloppy heart. Dec 10, 2015 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times "American Hero" starts off seeming as if it is going to be a fresh take on superheroes, but Nick Love, who wrote and directed, turns out to have nowhere to go with his intriguing premise. Dec 10, 2015 Full Review Eddie Harrison The List The metaphor of superpowers equalling sober potential is good, but the careless development would barely fill a ten-minute short, making American Hero something of a slog. Rated: 2/5 Jul 3, 2017 Full Review Andrew Marshall Starburst American Hero is a decent idea, but is let down by sloppy execution and meandering plot. Rated: 6/10 Jul 11, 2016 Full Review Maitland McDonagh Film Journal International This drama about a deadbeat father trying to straighten up for his young son takes an unusual and not particularly convincing turn when it's revealed that dad has a superpower. Matt A Think ‘Chronicle' but with an older and more deadbeat ‘hero' with powers… American Hero by director Nick Love - he who made Danny Dyer a ‘star' with Football Factory and Outlaw etc… Man I loved this - Nick Love definitely made something off beat and cool here. Dorf is excellent and the effects are surprisingly cool for a low budget. Plus CHVRCHES Tether remix on the soundtrack!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Will G Poor mans hancock? Hell no. This is a 40 yr old still living teenage dropout dreams coming-of-age wet dream. Eddie griffin made this work. W/o him it might have been as worn out as hamcocks.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Banos, Amelia 2 Hahahhahahaha a captain America ripoff Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Luis Jesus G The brotherhood love felt real, the story line and acting was top notch Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Ryan M My favorite superhero movie. These low ratings must have been written by 10 year olds. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member im not sure where all the bad ratings are from. people complain of bad writing and acting, but frankly it's quite good. in my opinion it was better than hancock, which everyone seems to compare it to.
