Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times There is nothing really the matter with An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, except that it is not inspired with an extra spark of imagination in addition to its competent entertainment qualities. [Full review in Spanish] Dec 12, 2022 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine Primarily aimed at children, it is a cartoon romp with the honky-tonk humor of a Looney Tunes adventure. But it is witty, well crafted-and clever enough to amuse adults. Oct 11, 2019 Full Review Rachel Wagner rachelsreviews.net In the end, it's a pretty entertaining story with twists and turns. Noe G An American tail fievel goes West is my most favorite in American tail movie from 1991 I give this film a 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Ash P Better than the first film? Not close enough but still a fun film from when I was a kid. Not only as a decent movie for a goofy western for kids, but also a tribute for Jimmy Stewert for this was his last role before his passing. For me as an adult watching this again, it's as nostalgia as I remember as a kid. 7/10. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Sarah W Masterpiece worth watching for 1991 along with beauty and the beast, beautifully animated Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Audience Member Still one of my favorite childhood flicks after 30 years! I never saw the original until this movie Some things are better from the more fluid animation to the catchy song numbers and the overall western feel But I do understand the novelty of Don Bluth's original 1986 masterpiece; it was a simple story of a mouse family from Russia escaping persecution looking for new beginnings An animalized metaphor for searching for the American dream having the immigration experience Lots of satire juggling harsh emotions but always keeping that family entertainment value With Fievel Goes West the story focuses on the cute little mouse dreaming of fighting bad guys with Sheriff Wiley Burp voiced by the late James Stewart Fievel's sister Tanya actually gets more of an arc here having grown up a bit and dreaming of making it big as a professional singer Their parents are barely getting by with little money and less food for themselves so their last chance may be heading out west After a cat attack on unsuspecting mice in New York City Fievel and his family are tricked into heading to the other side of the country by a cat name Cat R. Waul voiced by John Cleese claiming that mice and cats should work together building the dream home for them both as a paradise Fievel then gets lost again in the desert while his best friend Tiger voiced by the late Dom Deluise misses his beau Miss Kitty voiced by Amy Irving who's also headed out west Fievel then finds out Cat R. Waul's plan to turn the rest of the mice into meals so he seeks the help of Wiley who's all washed up from his sheriff days Not only that but he also wants to help Tiger become more like a dog if they have a fighting chance Can Fievel, Tiger, and Wiley defeat the fierce felines and save their fellow mice? The movie has critics split yes since it doesn't have the same emotional resonance as the first movie Some of the racial depictions and stereotypes are very dated But I felt this one left more of an impact on me growing up The music has a great mixture of traditional score with western influence, Tanya as a singer is sweeping with her amazing vocals, Tiger gets more to do comically acting against his nature as another animal The climax is super exciting I gotta say being a Mexican standoff with wacky antics The last words by Stewart you have to admit are very much the most poignant thing in the movie which did surprise me Even though this movie bombed when it came out it still holds a special place in my heart There's so much to enjoy, to laugh at, to sing along to and it's way less dour than the previous entry An entertaining story still with twists and turns along the lines of a cartoon but doesn't miss all the fun beats of an old western Kids will love it and maybe adults will too Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Matt L Critics have no idea what a good movie is. Their ratings is BS!!!!! Such a good movie, animation, voice acting, music, atmosphere (I could go on and on!). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/23 Full Review Cameron L Great animation first off, and the commentary about exploiting labor is pretty good. Plus, seeing John Cleese as the villain and James Stewart as the old hero is more than enough for me to give it a view here and there Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
