Amsterdamned can’t decide if it wants to embrace those who interact with the city or kill them, and this contradiction is part of the film’s slimy, schlocky charm. Go to Full Review

Claudio C Jun 19 Amsterdamned (1988) A Great Dutch Thriller That Has Not Aged (11,772 – 18 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) When a prostitute (Barbara Martijn) is captured by a diver in one Amsterdam canal, her body appears later hanging on a bridge. The efficient Detective Eric Visser (Huub Stapel), who raises his teenage daughter Anneke (Tatum Dagelet) alone, goes to the crime scene to investigate the murder scene. His partner Potter (Tanneke Hartzuiker) interviews a beggar, who claims that a black monster left the canal to kill the woman. Soon other victims appear dead in the canals and Visser and his partner Vermeer (Serge-Henri Valcke) realize that there is a diver serial killer in Amsterdam. Visser visits a diving club, where he meets Laura (Monique van de Ven) and invites her for a drink. However, her friend and psychologist Martin Ruysdael (Hidde Maas) arrives at the bar and invites her to a play and Laura leaves Visser in the bar. Laura becomes the romantic interest of Visser, while the serial-killer proceeds his crime spree. The mayor presses the chief of police that says that Visser is his best detective for the case. Who might be the killer? “Amsterdamned” (1988) is a great Dutch thriller that has not aged after so many years. The police story is great, with a serial-killer that attacks his victims diving below the several canals in Amsterdam. The scene with speedboats of Detective Eric Visser chasing the serial killer through the several canals in the city is still amazing since was made in a period before CGI. This film is not a masterpiece because of the poor conclusion, which is rushed with an unexpected character. But anyway, it is worthwhile watching this movie. In Brazil, it was released on VHS in the 80’s and was very successful. My vote is eight. Sense of seriousness is not there and dialogue delivery is flat See more a.l.jude p 05/01/2022 Comparatively, better suspense movie to English made ones. See more 11/10/2020 Plays more like a murder mystery than the slasher film it pretends to be. But it's got a fairly unique story, some impressive set-pieces and a pretty charismatic protagonist. Plus the gorgeous locations really go a long way. See more 11/07/2020 Extremely likable horror film whose Amsterdam shooting locations impart an uncommonly cozy feeling. Surrounding the kills with creative set pieces and compelling chase scenes will undoubtedly help endear this distinctively Dutch production to all but the most hardcore genre fans. See more 12/29/2018 A pretty good movie. Its more of a suspense thriller than horror. Saw it with english dubbing vs subtitles (didn't have a choice on shudder). Theres an amazing speed boat chase through the canals of Amsterdam that was exciting. Its a decent whodunit especially for the 80's. See more Read all reviews
